Hi folks,

I am trying to get the driveline support beam and propeller shaft off in preparation for engine/transmission removal on my 1990 C4 L98 six speed. Can anyon help with a few questions?

1) I have taken everything around the gearshift lever off inside the car. Does the gearshift lever itself need to come off or can that stay on?

2) When removing the driveline supprt beam, how do get a wrench above the it to keep the nuts from turning (on the front)? The back looks doable but I can't seem to get a wrench on top of the front of it.

3) Should the propeller shaft slide out without removing the beam? I can't seem to get it out with the beam in place.

4) What holds the transmission in - only the support beam?

5) Can you remove the engine with the exhaust manifolds on?

Thanks for your help.

Mike

I can only comment on #3. I just replaced my u-joints and was able to get the drive shaft out and back in without removing the support beam. It was tight but doable. Mine is an '88 automatic.

I thought it was interesting that the section of the service manual for removing the support beam says to remove the drive shaft first and the section on removing the drive shaft says to remove the support beam first.;shrug

go to the zr1 net registry and find the zf doc . his site will give you what you need

ZR1 Registry

Looks like the ZR1 Registry wants me to be a member in order to access the zf document. It costs $40. Anyone have a membership they would care to use to download the doc and e-mail to me?

And thanks everyone for your help! I am going to try and squeeze the propeller shaft out today - and hopefully get some additional info on the beam.

PS Yes, it's allot easier without them, but the engine will come out of there with the exhaust manifolds on!!

PS Or you can go to the Sight and Copy and Past off the browser!!:beer

take a wrench - no, not your good one, and cut it in 1/2

Now it will have clearance to get up in there.

Then order the beam plates frm ZF.doc(which capture the nuts) and use those during your re-asembly :beer
