I have a 69 that was born in February 69 according to the VIN. (728008) Some parts listings have 69E or 69L, sometimes 69M. Far as I can tell, they were built from September 68 to December 69. How do I know which I have? :confused

I have the interior gutted and the paint stripped down to the black fiberglass. All I need now is $$$! :v Still have plenty to keep me busy for free! Detailing all the parts and replacing the ones that are too far gone.

Cars aren't early or late. Parts may be early or late. So your car may have originally come with some early and some late parts. What happens is changes to parts occur throughout production and as these new parts come in they are used. There is usually a span of time where both early and late parts are being used at the same time. If your car was made before the change over period you would have an early part. If it was made after, you would have a late part. If it was during, you could have either. The NCRS technical judging guide is a good source. It give VIN ranges when changes occurred.

Your '69 is 28,*** of 38,*** total production , which would put it as a late production .
As stated above by Rainman, early and late has nothing to do with VIN number, but has everything to do with the introduction date of the individual part.

A good example- '73s built in the last 3-4 weeks of the model year production run still had the 'early' front grills, only the last few hundred built had the 'late' part installed. In the same year, there was a switch over on the carb solenoid from 'early' to 'late' within the first month of production.

The NCRS 1968-69 Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide will note most of the part usages that changed during the year, and in many cases provides the approximate VIN# breakpoint where each of the changes occurred. You won't find that information anywhere else.

JohnZ is right. If you care about what is correct for your car, there will be no money better spent the on the NCRS Guide.
