On another forum i got into a disagreement about the exact specs of the LS6.

he said that the engine is 5.7L and 347.8 cubic inches

But specs from GM say 350c.i. at5.7L

and he played with some #'s and said that the engine is either:

1 347.8 CI from a 5.7L

2 350 CI from a 5.735L engine

so what is the correct answer here?? :confused

I think its the 347. GM pulled a blue oval (remember the 5.0L / 4.999?) and did some "rounding up".

The Gen I and II 5.7 engines were 350 CI. When the Gen III engines debuted the actual displacement was 347.X, not exactly certain of the 10ths.
So depending on what generation small block 350 one is talking about it could be either.

According to the official GM dealer brochure for a 2004 Z06 (LS6) engine:

"405-HP 5.7 Liter LS6 V8 engine with Sequential Fuel Injection."

To convert Liters to cubic inches multiply by 61.023, so:

5.7 x 61.023= 347.8311 cubic inches. :D

Sorry I couldn't be be more specific. :L

Zippy :) :)

LS1 bore size is 99 millimeters (3.8976 -in.). That, with a stroke of 92 mm (3.6620-in), makes the LS1's displacement 5.665 liters or 345.69 cubic inches.

Pretty much every engine is rounded up or down like that. They are never quite exactly what they say. 302's, 307's, and 308's are all considered 5.0 liters, for example.

I'm confused by your math. Using 3.1416 for Pi and using 3.8976 bore size gives a radius of 1.9488. Pi x radius squared times stroke of 3.6620 gives a cylinder volume of 43.692, multiplied by 8 = 349.536 c.i.

I've always heard the LSX engines mentioned as 346 ci. This sounds the most accurate to me. All engine manufacturers round these numbers -- usually UP!:beer

Yeah, you guys are probably right with 346. You can't be perfectly precise with just bore and stroke measurements only anyway. And I guess it's a lot easier to round to 5.7 liters than it is 350 ci.

KOPBET:

I think the difference is there is something lost in the conversion from metric to standard. I did it the standard way using cubic inches, and got what you did. Then I did it with metric figures (99mm bore x 92mm stroke) and got the 5.665 liters like he did. If you use the conversion coefficient given, it comes to 345.725 liters. Interesting.

99mm = 3.897626 inches
92mm = 3.622036 inches <--- here is your problem...the inches given were 3.6620 rather than 3.6220 in a post above.

(with nothing more productive to do)

As I said earlier in this thread, the LS1 is about 346 cid. I arrived at that number by doing the math with metric units, then doing the metric-english conversion with the resulting displacement.

GM calls it a "350" for obvious, marketing reasons
