On my '84, I ocassionally have a faint smell of gas. Now that I'm paying attention to it more, I seem to notice it more than I did previously. I'm wondering if the gas smell is coming from the carb (I have a crossfire engine) and making its way to the AC/vent air intake near the windshield.

I had someone a long time ago suggest replacing the carbon filter cylinder in the front and I did that. But since I still notice the smell, that didn't fix the problem. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing that smell and where I can look to elminate it?

Thanks,
John

I had the same problem, you said you changed the canister . That is always helpful on an older vehicle. On my vette it was the carb. I retorked the bolt where the gas line feeds in. That stopped it. Look for the easy solutions and be careful no to over tork the fittings. They are easy to strip.

I've looked for a line to the semi-fuel injector on the crossfire engine and I don't see one easily accessible. I am not sure how to take the pan off the dual carb area which is the lower part of the aircleaner assembly. I'll have to look at the shop manual for that info.

Any other suggestions would be great as well.

Thanks,
John

had gas smell problem. fuel lines were rotted out where they bend around in front of spare tire just below the rear leaf spring on the rite side.

There are two 10mm bolts above each thottle body that hold the lower section on to them, through a pair of circular hold-down rings.

Fuel smells can be very hard to trace. I had one once that only appeared when a certain window open configuration existed. It was drafting fuel vapors from the filler area. I had rebuilt my TBs a few times for leaks; bad seals.

I had forgotten about this post and thought I would tell everyone what the final outcome was. I ended up looking at a number of things including removing the air fileter assembly and changing the dried and cracked gaskets between the assembly and the engine.

However, in the long run, it turned out to be the easiest fix of all. I had purchased one of the filll-through gas caps from a corvette store a couple of years ago. This is one of those caps that you can just stick the gas nozzle right into and never have to remove the gas cap. Well, I noticed a stong smell of gas in the back one day and started doing some checking. I found that I had some gas in the gas tank fill area (it was damp) and when I took off the gas cap, it smelled very heavily of gas.

I changed back to the stock gas cap and the problem has gone away. I have not noticed the smell since the day I changed that cap. The old one seemed to work properly. The spring was tight but it was contributing to the problem in some way, shape or form. But for now, everything is running perfectly again. Especially for an 84 with only 50k miles on it.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions from everyone.
John
