Noticed last evening that our 2003 has started to Beep/park lights flash for no apparent reason.

The '03 is sitting in the garage with a battery tender on it, has been for quite awhile :( last time I had it out was back in February...

I disconnected the battery tender about an hour ago, the Beep/Lights have gone off twice since I unplugged the tender ;shrug

I did a quick search thru the forums for something similar but found nothing of any use.. I am thinking a new battery may be in order since it still is the original (2003) :o

Sure ain't like the old 1981 :nono .... I'm scared to death to change the battery in the 03... with all them fancy computers and settings :eek

Thoughts??? What is an 03 Anniversary Convert auto with 32,000 miles worth now days :eyerole

The MOST important item to do correctly when replacing a C5 battery is the tightness of the battery cable bolts/clamps. I am NOT kidding!

Over tightening them can lead to cracking the case and having acid/mat substance leaking all over your main computer and a whole lot of wiring.

I believe the torque spec for the battery cable bolts/clamps is 12 ft.lbs.

Maybe someone else can chime in if I am incorrect on the torque spec.

You can do it, Bud! I KNOW you can!

:w

Thanks for the vote of confidence "D" and Gregory, but I am thinking getting a hold of C4C5 and send him First Class Airfare to Amarillo, OR call AAA and let them change it or tow it to the Chevy garage :D

So you guys say the Battery would cause the "Beep / Flash"... Guess time to search past threads on C5 Batteries.... deep breath/sign and a little !~@#!@#$!@#$

Thanks

It's no big deal, Bud. The torque spec is 11 lb ft. I went out to HF and bought a 1/4" torque wrench just for doing that job.

On another thread I saw 89 inch lbs.....that must turn into 11 ft lbs....make sure you get the right battery....

The terminals should be torqued to 11 foot pounds. 12 inch pounds equals 1 foot pound. Thus, 89 inch pounds divided by 12 equals 7.4 foot pounds, which is incorrect. The correct inch pound setting would be 132 inch pounds (12 inch pounds multiplied times 11). Nothing magical, just basic math.

I don't know about that, but I do know that a 9 year old battery is way past pushing the limits of a battery's life span.

Especially in a Vette, anything past 3 or 4 years is asking for trouble.

My situation is different because I am constantly driving my Vette.

Most Vette owners are driving their Vette once or twice a week. Some even less.

Bud, you have certainly gotten WAY MORE use than normal from the OEM battery.

An ORIGINAL battery in any new car usually only lasts one or two years! New car batteries are warranted for one year. Must be a reason for that!

After replacing your battery, please be sure to SAVE the WAVE! :w

Thanks everyone :thumb

I went over to "Harbor Freight" yesterday and bought a 1/4" torq to go with my 3/8" and 1/2" torq wrench. Any reason to go to "Harbor Freight" is a good reason :dance

I realize "Harbor Freight" ain't no Craftsman or Snap On, but it sure feels good to shop there and just browse around and handle the merchandise...

Found 3 places here in Amarillo that stock the 78-6Y (700 cca; 120 ca) all under $115.

I unplugged the tender Saturday evening, and the Beep/Flash stopped... so yesterday morning (Monday) I plugged the tender back in and everything seems normal, no more Beep/Flash.. and the Tender charged then went to tender mode.

When :chuckle we decide to take the 03 out for a trip I will put a new battery in. Hell it probably will sit another 7 months or more... I do have to get it out at least once a year to get the State "Safety Inspection" done, no smog, just a "Safety Inspection" ;shrug ...

Thanks everyone for the inspiration and support, I plan to do the replacement myself and save the GM $55 fee to change the battery... Walmart does it for FREE :D

As for Abby being for sale.... :chuckle everything has a price on it, two fools would need to meet, but for the right price I'd sell.... better not go there :eek :w
