fly wheel cover?

I feel like a total idiot, but shouldn't there be a cover over
the tranny?

As you may notice, there is a ton of grease over everything and I'm thinking/hoping that this is the cause...

once again, i feel like an idiot!

YEP, there should sure be one...probably be able to find one from one of the many salvage yards pretty easily.

340252 cover

gedmeyer - When you order your carb stuff from your local GM dealer, also order GM# 340252 cover. Thats what you're missing there. The cover and about (4 - 5) 1/4"coarse thread x 1/2" long attaching bolts is all you need.

see ya! Dave

is there going to be anything else that could result from me driving it all summer without that cover on it? (should it be greased or anything?) There is something oily all over the underside in front of that area and I don't think it is motor oil. Could it be tranny lube?

Most likely engine oil. The only way I can think of that it was trans oil would be if your front input seal was leaking which is very doubtful. There is nothing that needs lubricated in there but you may want to remove your trans fill plug and make sure it's full. Just get the cover, clean that area up around down there and install the cover, you'll be good to go.

It looks like engine oil to me too. Try to tighten the oil pan bolts while ur at it. If oil continues to drip, it's probably the rear main seal leaking..... :-(
BUt most definately- ur missing the cover...
