Was browsing through some threads last week and came accross the one about making use of the wasted ash tray space. Thats what I love about this forum, there are so many good ideas.

I particularly like the one about taking the guts out of the garage door opener and mounting it in the never used ashtray.

Right after I read the post I went into my workshop, cut a piece of 1/8 Lexan sheet to fit the ashtray opening. Pulled apart the opener and reworked the circuit board to relocate the push button and LED. After spray painting the Lexan sheet flat black I secured the circuit board to the backside and mounted the relocated pushbutton and LED on the new panel. Using a few strips of velcro, I then installed it in the vette. Total time about 1.5 hours not including the time for the paint to dry. Check out the attached pics.

Thanks again to CAC and keep the good ideas coming.

Pretty cool idea . You can still close the ashtray lid , can't you ? I wonder if it could be done so as to have the lid almost all the way closed but resting against the button , so you could just touch the lid to activate the opener . Cliff

Yes I have to agree ... pretty cool idea! My ash tray is where I have the switches for the NOS ... 3 switches in all, to turn on, to open and close NOS bottle and to trigger NOS injection. I can still close to Lid cover to hide this switches ... and the lighter still works too.

I have pics of my modified 2001 coupe below:

Enjoy

Cliff,

Yes the cover closes nicely. Sure its possible to adhere a spacer to the inside of the flip up cover to press against the switch. I didn't think of that idea, I'll have to play around and see how it works.

One thing I forgot to mention is I'd like to find a small 50th anniveresary small emblem to adhere to the right of the pushbutton and LED. I think that would really give it a factory installed look. I have my eye on one of those small lapel pins that are in the Mid America catalog. In case its not obvious, the pushbutton and LED have to be sqwished to the left to accommadate the circuit board underneath.
