After reading the advice from many on this and other forums I set out to advance the timing to 12-14 BTDC. I did so and after a few days noticed occasional pinging. Went to back the timing off a bit and discovered the timing was back where it was before I advanced it the first time. Advanced it back to 12 BTDC, problem repeats itself.

I decided to start over by resetting the timing back to the factory timing (6 BTDC), but now when I plug the CCC back in after adjusting the timing, the car runs HORRIBLE and dies half the time. With the CCC unplugged, the car actually runs fairly well, but my MPG sucks.

I've checked the distributor rotor position with the timing mark on the damper at zero on the timing scale, everything seems fine.

I've checked the solenoid with a stethescope and I still hear it clicking.

I AM AT A LOSS. PLEASE HELP.

Have you tried setting your timing using total timing? You will need a dial back timing light or timing tape on your balancer. Just set the timing at 34 degrees at 3000 rpm(for a starting point) and see how the car runs.

It sounds as if the 4-pin connector outside of distributor was not disconnected before changing the initial timing...;shrug

How many miles on your vette???
I am wondering if you timing chain has jumped a tooth or is worn???

Ok....how about you find your when the #1 cylinder is on the power stroke and then just see where the mark on the dampener is relative to?

I getting at the posibility that the dampener's outer ring may have slipped from it's location.

But really the best way to do this is by finding your true TDC. Then look at the mark on the dampener and also look at the relative position of the dizzy's
distributing rotor in relation to the electrode to which the number 1 wire connects on the cap.

So, I'd at top dead center, and aligned at the dampener at zero then the rotor pointer should be aligned with the #1 electrode on the distributor cap. Or, perhaps TDC is not zero on the dampener and timing scale...

Something has got to give.....

Problem solved-OE

Turns out I'm an idiot. Forgot to check the adjustment dial on the timing light. All is good.

I have a mechanical only advance Mallory dist. in my 1966 with a 454 cu. in. and I set the initial at 14 degrees before TDC. I also added a spring loaded push button switch so I can send a full 12 volts to the coil (bypass ballast resistor) when I start. My mini-starter does not have the extra terminal that would send 12 volts to the coil like the origional starter/solinoid. The engine starts and runs great with this set-up.
