today my fuel guage started acting funny. it was at 1/2 and then suddenly dropped to empty. when i filled up it only took 8 gallons.:(

i've been researching on the cac all morning and realize that the problem is probably my sending unit. my dic is giving me a code 1431.

my question is, has anyone done this repair? how hard is it? do i have to drop my fuel tanks to get at the sensors?

any info, as usual, is greatly appreciated.:)

I bet that there are several previous threads on this. C4C5 has explained what the problem is. It is the sending unit.

HI there,
This is sort of true.
The first course of action is to reprogram the fuel diagnostic within the PCM. This should always be the first course of action.
Next, would be to see if this does not cure the problem. If it does NOT cure the problem, then simply put, replace the passenger side sensing unit.
This can be done without dropping the tank.

I had the same problem. Reprogramming worked on mine.

c4c5,

thanks for the info (as usual). so, the reprogram sometimes works on the 98? i read somwhere that the reprogram only worked on the new models. is there any truth to that?

thanks,

HI there,
Honestly, starting with the simple repairs always is the first thing.
I have had some that work and some that do not, however it is still cheaper than replacing the sensing unit. Also, you will get the latest upgrades to the operational function of the engine and transmission.
Always a good idea to start the easy way.

My 97 fuel gauge has acted up since new, always goes back to normal after a restart and will remain correct for weeks. so I just ignore it and make sure I reset the trip meter at each refueling.I've heard of too many failures with the other two options,so will wait for a complete failure.

Got the fuelgauge problem 5 weeks agao. Was rekomended to use an injektorcleaner BG44K. Get a can, it helped me...

thanks...i put in some 44k a few months ago but lately (and i knock on wood as i write this), the gauge has been acting much better. i really appreciate all the replies.

cheers,

tom
