Fuel Pump Issue ?

JohnZ said:
The photo of the hose looks like it's the incorrect (too long) replacement part that many vendors sold years ago; they were about 1-1/2" longer than the production part, and were prone to kinking. Paragon has the correct-length hose assembly. :)

Well I got my part from one of the other vendors - what a disaster:

Got underneath the car to just to check to see if the new part is shorter than the one that's opn the car. While I'm fooling with it to try to get an accurate measurement the hose on the car cracks wide open - fuel running everywhere !!! I'm not ready for this and am running around like a chicken with his head cut off looking for pans to catch the fuel and a vise grip to clamp the hose off to stop the flow.

Needless to say, but I'm not a happy guy at this point. Garqage smells like gas, house smells like gas, I smell like gas. AND.....the part I received is the same as the one that's on the car. Since I don't want to leave the car like that I go ahead and install the new hose anyway just so there's no chance of more fuel leaking while I'm out of town for the next few days, since the "little lady" is even more P.O'd than I am about stinking up the house.

This happened late Sunday afternoon; today while I'm laying around the airport I call paragon to order the "correct" part. I ask the guy on the phone how long the part is; he's nice enough to ask me to hold on while he goes and gets one and measure's it for me. It's the same size as the one I got from the other guys.

So.....does any one know how long this hose is supposed to be ?? At this point I'm wondering if my hard line (from tank to pump) is the wrong length. And will it be easier for me just to have someone make up a shorter hose for me.

Sorry for getting so long winded (again), but I'm getting a little tired of messing with this thing that should be a 15 - 20 minute fix.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Bernie O.

sorry for all the trouble on what should be an easy replacement.
Maybe try Dr. Rebuild for the hoses? I got new ones from him (along with the rest of a LARGE order) for my '78 and they were perfect.

If the hoses are just a bit too long, am I missing something here or why can't you just take some cutters or a razor blabe and trim off a little of the excess length from each end of the hose(s)? If these are the pre-shaped "S" hoses the bends will still be there and the shorter length after you trim them may make them work better without need to kink them to fit.

BTW, if Wendy is upset about the gas smell everywhere now you know you already have the answer for the cure to that problem........... just take her to the house in PR for a week or two and enjoy yourselves and there won't be any gas smell to worry about. :D

sorry you will be away and can't make it this weekend - I got your email about you being away. I think it's going to be a fun time on Sat.

Barry, the C1 hose is an assembly with a brass fitting swaged on each end - can't be trimmed to shorten it; however, the 45* fitting that adapts it to the fuel pump inlet can usually be oriented to an angle that allows the hose assembly not to kink. There's a specific angle for that fitting noted in the Assembly Manual, but I don't have one for the '62.

thanks, I didn't know that and mistakening assumed they were similar to the fuel hoses on my '65. I just looked again at the picture Bernie sent and I posted for him and now see what you are referring to.
Perhaps it's as simple as the fitting angle that you mention and he just needs to adjust that.

could the issue be with the motor rather than the hose? Bernies '60 is a NOM car with a 350ci motor in it.

John,

I think I have the fitting positioned correctly (it shows the corect angel in Noland Adams book), but I'll take a look at it. I remember trying just about every angle with the first hose and no matter where I put it the hose kinked, just sometimes worse than others.

Is it possible the fule pump itself is the culprit or the hard line form the tank ?

Barry,

maybe I'll try Dr. Rebuild; I always had good luck with his stuff to, particularly hard to find items, which this has now become.

Thanks,

Bernie O.

If your hose cracked, it wasn't real fuel line. "Regular" rubber tubing is not compatible with gas, it will harden and crack.

Good luck.
