I just finished sanding my fuel rail covers and the ASR cover smooth and painted them with body color paint (Polo Green). The next step will be to have a local pinstripng guy paint the letters in a beige paint that matches the interior of the car.
The sanding of the textured surface was a bear to do and took a lot of 320-grit paper to get them nice and smooth. I worked a couple hours a day on them and got all 3 pieces done in a week. I used some Dupli-Color spray cans of touch-up paint to do the finish. Did 3 coats of Dupli-Color gray sandable primer and wet-sanded with 400-grit in between coats. Then I sprayed 3 wet coats of Dupli-Color Polo Green Metallic over that. Sanded with 1500-grit wet paper and then a final coat and sanded with 2000-grit and finally some 3-M polishing compound.
Rattle can auto paint will work fine as the temps should not get much over 200-250 in the engine compartment. The semi-flat black paint on the underside of the hood is just an inexpensive black lacquer with no primer. Just be sure to clean the plastic surface of the covers with Prep-Sol or something like that to remove all traces of grease and oil. Dawn dishwashing soap and hot water will work too.
