Gas Gauge Malfunctions - I am seeing a pattern here

I filled the tank this morning and the gauge worked fine all the way to work. On my way home it worked fine untill the gauge dropped just a bit below full. I cleared the codes, works again.

The last time this happened, it was the same deal, and the code clearing worked for a day, then it would throw the codes again. But once the tank down to about 1/2 it started to work fine untill it was down close to E, a span of 4 or 5 days.

Seems there is a "bad spot" which is between just under F and a little over 1/2 a tank.

Seems kind of weird, I guess I should just stop filling up and keep the tank a little over 1/2 ....

Also, I added a bottle of Techron to the tank and it does seem to help. I notice a little better response and what little hunting idle was left after the plug and wire change is all but gone.

The gauge just goes to empty and throws 2 codes, lighting the check gauges dash light.

Did it yesterday, I cleared the codes and it worked fine all day today......

More of a nuisance than anything else. I am avoiding having to take it to the dealer at all costs, so until it quits working altogether I am living with it.

Likely a bad gas tank sensor or short in the wire running to it.

Most likely. I am leaning toward an intermittant short, if the sensors were bad you would think it would flaky all the time, which is not the case. It only seems to happen between a 1/2 and little under full tank. The gauge has worked fine below 1/2 tank. ........

This "dropping to empty" is common on C5s.

I've had my sensors replaced three times under warranty. Not having any problems lately, but if you want to not spend the money (it's not cheap). have your dealer reflash the PCM to the most current version -- they did this to mine and it seems to have helped -- apparently this also has something to do with it.

c4c5specialist can provide the details.

Also, the additives in certain brands of gas also cause a problem.

Try changing brand of gas. Chevy says this is due to high surphur (sp?) in fuel causing spikes which are misread.

I can't use AMMCO, EXXON is okay. BUT, even brands could vary in different parts of the country.

I should have put a different gas in, at my last fill-up. Stay away from Chevron. The sulpher content is partially responsible. I'm not quite sure how to clear the codes, but I'm new to this forum, and I'm so glad I joined the furum because I now have better forsight on what to expect. I had the fuel sensor replaced a couple of months ago, but it's back to the same thing. It should hold 18.5 gallons, but only takes 16.5 gal, so you know there is a problem! Good Luck!
