I have a gas smell in the cockpit when I drive. It happens usually when I hit the brakes harder than normal. I got out of the car and sniffed around, and all I found was the gas cap compartment area had a strong gas odor?

This is my first Vette and I just got it about 2 months ago, so I was wondering if this is normal/what could it be/what should I look for?

Thanks!

Check to make sure the fuel cap isn't leaking. Do the same with any fuel or evap lines that might run to the tank. Some of these might not be easy to see. You may need to remove the spar tire carrier and use an inspection mirror and a flexible light source to view them.

Sorry but I can't help myself, I have a gas problem when my wife is in the right seat! ;LOL

Seriously though, I have never smelled gas in the car but I do occasionally smell gas when I pull into the garage after driving. Not even after a fill-up. Randomly I will smell gas but I have replaced the gas cap. I think it is fuel evaporating and no big deal as I don't have a gas water heater or gas furnace in my garage. :W

Hope you get it worked out. All the best.

Paul

This may or may not apply to you because you smell gas INSIDE your car, but you may want to check anyway.

According the Haynes Service Manual, "The most common symptom of a fault in the evaporative emissions system is a strong fuel odor in the engine compartment. If fuel odor is detected, inspect the charcoal canister. The Charcoal canister is located at the left front corner of the engine compartment on '84-'91 models, or at the right rear quarter panel above the muffler on 1992 and later models"

I had a gas smell on my '98. It turned out to be the fuel filter orings leaking. The filter was located underneath near where the driver's door closes. Did you solve your problem?

Thank You Everyone!

Thanks. I am just getting to check everything today because I have had Midterms all week:Wand they were not fun!

I have to check to see if the fuel filter smells, see if it smells under the hood, and take off the spare to check the gas tank for leaks.

I smell it when the top is off, or the windows are open so, who knows? But, I will let all of you know as soon as I check everything today!

I am still learning how to use the service manuals, but I saw the diagnostic section that you were talking about. Thanks!

Thank You all for being friendly and helpful!
