I have a couple qucik questions about gears. First, where is the best place on-line to buy them? Second, about how much am I looking at for the install? Thanks for your help.

Randy's Ring and Pinion is one I can think of.

Install costs will vary depending on your area. Also some places won't install parts you bring them, check first. I just had my rear rebuilt (all new shims, seals, bearings) the guy told me it would be around $450. When I went and picked it up he only charged me $320. I think the break in price came from the amount of time it took to get done. There is only one place that specializes in drive train around here so he stays busy, that and we had a Tropical storm one weekend then the following weekend we had a Hurricane blow through.

I just got 3.54's installed, what a difference. $400 for gears and bearings and 8 hours to install, that was the time quote from 3 shops. Up here it's $80.00 an hour.

Labor around here runs about $50-$60/hr. I just wasn't sure how labor intensive the install would be.

The actual setting up of a diff can be a pain. Assemble, check, diassemble, add shims, reassemble, check ... you get the idea.

Removing the "chunk" is a job in itself. The drive shaft has to be disconnected, the C-Beam (torque arm) has to be disconnected, and the rear half-shafts need to be disconnected, and the strut rods have to be disconnected. Then its just 5 bolts that hold the rear "chunk" to the diff carrier.

A quote of 8 hours is a good deal if they are removing the "chunk" and doing the install. I got my "chunk" out in about two. About four hours to reinstall (took my time.)

This is my first car with irs and i knew it would be a little more difficult but damn. Kinda makes you miss the simplicity of a solid axle.

Wow, that is a great deal and a relief to have your work done by such an honest shop.

Yea Stan is pretty good. I really trust his work. All the hot rodders and 4X4 guys trust him also (good thing cos hes the only shop around). One thing I had to do was bring him the "chunk" there was no way he was going to do it for that price and remove it.
