My gm crate engine is now up and running and running good! the most frustrating thing now is the break in process. That urge to put my foot in the carb but knowing I can't yet. The idle is just a little bit fast around 1000 in nuetral 700 in drive with brakes on. It sometimes varies up or down with air conditioning compressor at a constant on or off. i'm guessing this could come from the computer-controled carb, which I soon hope to dump along with computer and upgrade to a high performance carb and distributor. The oil dip-stik and oil cap is now under the duct that draws hit air into the carb. This is not handy because the carb has to come apart just to check the oil or add oil. another bit of handy-work by my mechanic...he has jammed the pcv valve into the opening at an angle because he was too lazy to cut it off an inch so it fits right. So I guess I'll head down to the local hardware and pick-up a hack-saw. Hey in spite of these minor difficutlies..I'm havin' a blast with my car> It was a month today that the engine fell apart on me. That's a long time! Now I'm looking forward to waking up the sleeping giant with the new carb and distributor! Anybody know how much of the 330 hp I now have with the original computer-controlled set-up?

ever think about fuel injection, it will wake up that crate engine.
Good luck however you go.

Edelbrock makes a kit for the Vortec heads. i think it runs around $2000. but you need a chip from from a specialist. Edelbrock will hook you up with someone in your area that makes the right chip for the 330hp crate motor. just a thought for later down the road if the smog nazis come knocking on your door. glad to hear it is running and your enjoying the motor. kit for vortex heads

brian when you wrote " edelbrock makes a kit for vortex heads" did you mean an after martket computer and custom chip that recoginizes the Gm crate engine with the stock quadrajet carb or were you referring to a kit for a fuel injection setup?

Thanks

without looking at your setup I don't know if your dipstick problem is because the dipstick it self was switched or the location(Gm switched the dipstick from the drivers side to the passenger side some time in the 80's I believe) or just because the dipstick is the wrong shape/length. try looking through street rod mags for something that will work I think Lokar makes a stainless one that you can mount where ever you want. The fill hole can be changed by switching valve covers side to side, you may have to run a longer PCV hose or get a filler cap with the PCV built in (again street rod stuff) Edelbrock makes an EFI system for about 2000 that will replace the carb setup and look stock from a distance I believe it is also sequential which will help gas milage and emissions.

Edelbrock makes an EFI kit. it is multiport and sequential and also designed for the new Vortec heads. they do not make the chip that will cover the cam in the 330hp motor, but will hook you up with someone that can specialty burn you what you need. the kit comes with a new intake, computer, wiring harness, etc. it is a nice kit and looks good if you're into things that sparkle. Holley makes one as well but it think thay charge a little more. here is the site for your viewing pleasure,

hope this answers your questions, Brian.
