What is actually meant by an "open air box"?

Could be way off here but....I believe that's a reference to the air cleaner lid being cut open.

Get the metal kind with the center rib if you can't cut your own out. I bought the plastic one and sent it back ...flimsey, and expensive. No seal. It and the K&N was $120!!

Get an SLP Claw triple filter and enjoy more thrust and a cool whistle at idle and acceleration. Yeah we've argued this to death but it helped my motor breathe in and exhale through the wonderful Corsas. Looks like it means business too, and takes 10 minutes to put on. I love it. Keep the entire old assembly if you sell and brag no mods to the purchaser.

Or......could mean taking the targa out! ('Scuse me Porche for borrowing your word)

I`m with tlong spot-on on this one. I had exactly the same experience. I sent the cut-open air lid back to Mid_America because it didnt seem to seal right... the kit included a tube of grease that you were supposed to smear on the foam weatherstripping (also included) that you had to attach around the periphery of the airbox, before installing the airbox back on the car. It was kludgy and inelegant and didnt give me much confidence that it would last.

I then bought and installed the SLP claw and have been very happy with it.

I was and continue to be very happy with it. I have used K&N filters in all my vehicles for many years. The SLP device is solid and well engineered and comes with three K&N conical filters that you connect to the ends of the three air intake pipes on the "claw." All hardware for the install is included in the kit that you get.

You will feel a difference with the SLP system installed. They claim about 20 hp but not having done before & after dyno pulls, can't verify what the improvement is. But seat of the pants, you'll feel an improvement. I felt this mod was worth the money.

PS- regarding the size of the K&N's, they're pretty small (so that you can close the hood without obstruction) but again, the car definitely seems to breathe better than with the stock airbox.

I did the open air box on both my C4 and C5. Seems like it made a slight differance.

The physics involved with the SLP unit allows more air directly shot into the throttle body. After a good cruise the front is completely cool to the touch and does get cooler air from deeper into the shroud area.


It's heavy duty steel and whistles like an F-15 at idle and wot. Far superior to cut lid for function and looks in my opinion. Some have cut slits into the shroud under each filter to suck the good air into the deal. After having both this made me very happy.

I may go with smooth intake hoses but fear that may be a bit air foilish.

What did you guys pay for the "Claw" shipped? I just had the Magnaflow SS system installed and it sounds mean ....so it's now time to update the airbox. I really don't want to alter the stock airbox and it sounds to me that the "Claw" provides more bang for the buck.

I always wondered if that smooth hose was worth the money ($50. from Mid-America per my new catalog.) BTW I did install a Mid-America airfoil fwd of the throttle body a year ago and felt an improvement. I went with the one-piece press-fit type ($50.), not the bolt-in kind ($30.) as I was uncomfortable with the idea of that bolt getting loose and being sucked in.

Try Ebay. Search the net. I got mine for $209 free shipping but can't recall where. The hunt is fun to me.

I would love to hear the reviews on the hoses, plural. It takes two, $120. Yikes.

The hunt is fun for me as well although it's frustrating as hell to buy something and then read about anothers' purchase on this site who got the same thing for much cheaper ! That almost happened to me w/ my exhaust yet thanks to this site I had the upper hand when negotiating the price.

I think it will be a great compliment to your new exhaust. It changed the note on the Corsas, a bit deeper. LT-1/4 loves easy in and out airflow and responds kindly with more whuppass out of the skinny pedal to the right! When I punch it next to a wall at the entrance ramp it's a bit F1 sounding. That means she's breathing easy.

You must love that 4. They romp.

If you ever sell it's easy to put the old intake box back on and save the SLP for the next C4 or sell it for near the purchase price. Good hunting,
