Got Air?

I posted in the tech dept. and didn't get much action so I will try here. Anyone got suggestions for an airbox setup? Blackwing, Vararam are the main contenders for me and I have considered Vortex but I hate the idea of cutting my car in any way. I am frightened of Vararam a little because of possible water intake. (I don't drive in the rain but you can get caught in a bad one once in a while.) I also heard from several sources that it's really not a good idea to change the stock MAF. I went out and got a new Granatelli MAF(still in the box...they won't take it back. They say Granatelli charges 30% restock fee) I guess I'll sell it myself. Any imput is appreciated. aloha, i could not take a chance of water with the vara-ram, i got the halltech t-1, its a really nice piece, i cut out my fog light plastic,the filter sits above that opening. i eventually,trimmed my fan shroud around my filter.in a heavy down pour (hawaii has many),maybe a slight mist may get near the filter, but the filter is very water resistant.i drove in the rain many times. no problems at all, theres mineral oil in the filter. i can not imagine driving in a down pour with water being sucked straight into the intake duct.:crazy, there is a crappy picture of my halltech in my 'new member post'.later,Todd.

I went with the Vortex Ram-Air, along with a Predator, you can really notice the HP and torque gain. It doesn't rain much here and she is not a daily driver so I don't have to worry much about hydrolock.

It also increased my gas mileage, as long as I don't want to have any fun.

aloha, i forgot to mention that i race my car alot. i was getting 13.6 to 13.7 at 102.5. now im usually 13.4, 104m.p.h., 13.54 @104 m.p.h. is the worst run since putting the halltech on.that being said ,stop laughing because our track is pitifull, it has a concrete launch pad, it has never seen VHT, the best 60ft times are 2.25, trust me i know how to drive,at least there building a new track next year, i can really feel a differance through the whole powerband.later,Todd.

I recommend the 2002 or later Z06 airbox cover. Best bang for the $ (only $48). If you are under 405 hp, it will increase hp and sound great too. Dyno proven to be within few hp of any air intake system. Plus its OEM and designed for no water ingestion. I use a paper filter, some use a K&N, but be careful for MAF oil.

Thanks for the replys. I wonder why more people don't lean toward the Z box? I have never seen them side by side to compare how much less restrictive it is than the original LS1 box. I was assuming that it is only a bit larger than the LS1 box seeing as how many people with Z's seem to change their boxs over. OH, and what do you mean by saying "Watch out for the MAF oil?"

aloha, there is nothing wrong with the zo6 box, but in my case i plan on changing intake manifold, and throttle body, so then the stock air bridge and the 'accordian 'cause turbulance, the halltech goes from the filter to the throttle body replacing the air bridge and accordian.i look at it like a straw,the filter being one end of the straw and the intake manifold the other.right know the small parts of my straw are throttle body and intake manifold. i think the zo6 box 'resticts' the horse power to 405, because when a track buddy of mine changed his zo6 box and air bridge in his 2003 zo6, you can really feel a difference. before the halltech i have know, i had a k&n with the lid completely off, i think that out flows the stock zo6 box, i have never had a issue of oil getting on my mass air flow sensor, but every couple thousand miles i clean my throttle body and air flow sensor i also removed are screens from the sensor. plus the stock boxs dont look that great either, my friend, Da Hawaiian Punch, said he could not believe the halltech made such a difference over k&N and no lid.just my opinion,later Todd.

With the Zo6 air lid you still have the restrictive area in the neck of the box to go through.
I have the blackwing though and with track testing I ran 13.89 @104 with the stock box and the filter zip tied on the front (no lid) and with the Blackwing I ran 13.83 @ 104xx. It looks like it should flow more if you had more hp for it to support.

I use the VaraRam & a Z06 intake on my 2000 , and man what a noticeable difference in added power .. it works well for me ...

hello Don and Kelly,we race at the campbell industrial park.the track is really bad,a lot of military personnel come thru here,as you probably already know,and they think something is wrong with there cars, some even have there cars scanned.its funny because i here the same statements over and over.if the car is an f-body, most are,they all say there time is .3 slower than wherever they came from. funny you would think being a few feet above sealevel it would be ideal. there is always humidity in the air, and the launch pad is flat out dangerous. i think they are just letting it go, there is a new motorsports complex that is about to start construction. it will have 1.5 mile tri-oval, a seperate 1/4 mile track, the famous dirt track:eyerole a go-cart track,a nice road coarse and amuesment park. its being built at the "old" barbers point air field. if you go to hawaiiracewaypark.com click on motorsports complex they have the whole layout. if you plan on road racing at the current track,plan on having your car repainted. if you push-it hard,like im sure you do, one spin out,off the track you go into the very loose gravel,it will chip the paint on the whole side.you dont see to many nice street cars going full-out on this track.later,Todd

hey Don and Kelly,its probably the same concrete also:crazy there are dips,pot holes a 1inch bump were the concrete turns to asphault. a car has crashed completely off the track the last two times i went. i almost always go to the track with Da Hawaiian Punch on the c4 forums, hes a good friend of mine.my car is so low, i cant afford to go off the track,major body damage will occur.talk to you later,Todd.
