A customer of mine called me this a.m. to tell me he rcvd a call from 1 of his Super's(who I know) yesterday and that he bought a Vette. He went out to give a(senior citizen) lady an estimate on re-doing the exterior of her house.Walked by the garage and noticed a car under a cover with boxes etc... stacked on it.He asked what was under the cover and she told him it was her deceased husbands old sports car. He asked if she minded if he took a peek and of course she let him, when he pulled the cover back there sat a 68 with dealer sticker still on the window:drool: asked if she was interested in selling it and she told him $8000 and would not take any less.SOLD-white,black top,350 4spd and i guess in unbelievable condition

I always thought these type of stories were urban legends

:ugh Why doesn't that ever happen to me??

Not to be the doom sayer, and as I am too lazy to run upstairs and grab the Black Book, weren't small blocks all 327s in 68?

Just go to the tech center. It has all the poop. Maybe he ment 350 hp

Sounds like a nice find. I could probably look a lifetime and never come across such a deal.

Come on Guys!!!! Window sticker still in the window? Who keeps the window sticker in the window for more than an hour. Story sounds like an urban B.S.

What I was waiting to hear while reading the story was that he gave the lady an estimate on her house of $7,999. Then she turned around and asked for $8k out of him. Sounds like a fair trade right?

I don't mean to be cynical, but my thoughts exactly brother. Although I await pictures, the bill of sale would be most convincing. Example of reason for skepticism--went to a Kruse auction this weekend. There was a 66 base engine 4 spd low option with nose damage, the front bumper was so out of line that I assume it had at one point in its rough life been hit, an engine compartment that looked liked it had been left outside with the hood open and visible rust on the frame. Punch line it went for the high teens and it will easily take $30-50,000 to resto depending on how far the new owner takes it and how bad the frame really is. The sky is indeed falling and everything worth owning (any many that are not) is overpriced.

I did't mean to be cynical. I could believe a nice 68 Vert for $8000 is a good deal and I believe there are deals like that out there. I have seen them and I have heard of them. The situation is right with a poor widow who doesn't have a clue what the car is worth and probably remembers what her old hubby paid for it back in 85. She is just looking to get it out of the garage. I just thought the window sticker still in the window was overkill.

Sounds like a Taaaall tell to me by by a house contractor! Probably had a full tank of gas too that cost 31cents a gallon when it was filled up last. And the battery was still charged, started right up. :L ;LOL

Wannavette... don't assume that the car is in "unbelievable condition". I would be willing to bet the car has been sitting there even way before her husband past away. That generally does a car more harm that good. Expect to put in a substancial amount of money to get everything back into mechanical shape. Even fiber glass can dry rot. Just be prepaired... I wasn't with my 68! I now have an estimated 30K into mine getting it into show quality.

It's OK wannavette -

With the negative replies in this thread, I wouldn't expect wannavette to post any pictures when he receives them. This isn't even his car. He is just passing on what his customer passed on to him. I'm sure he was looking forward to sharing the story with CAC and then we let all of the air out of the balloon, which isn't even his balloon.

wannavette,

When you have all of the details and photos, some of us would love to see them. Whatever the final story is, I look forward to hearing it.

Thanks for posting,
Jeff

I agree with JR Maroon. Sure, it's hard to believe, but they DO HAPPEN. Ask me about my '62 Panhead, stored for 23 years, I rode it on the 5th kick. Paid 7K, with 23K original miles, it's a beauty. Or my TWO 1970 El Caminos, BOTH running, for $600. Or my (now my wife's) '86 Z28 Camaro, supposedly bad engine-guess what-crossed plug wires-$500. That's right, folks.

The deals are out there. Keep your eyes and ears open, let people know you are a hobbyist/collector, and sometimes they find you. That's the story of all 3 of the above-they approached ME! :D

Yes, I had some work to do. Exhaust systems, brake repairs, what have you. I'm still ahead of the game, though. I've even been turning some down, but mostly Fords. I don't play Ford. :)

wannavette, let's see some photos. And scan that window sticker-that's something I'd like to see, too.

saw pic's. late yesterday afternoon.Sorry he did not give them to me nor were they done with a digital camera. However, the car did not start had it towed, had to put in a new battery, had all fluids drained and refilled, tuned up,belts and hoses replaced.Running now and the guy is in heaven!!!

Car is pretty good shape paint wise but does need some attention in other areas. The window sticker part of it turned out to be still some residue from it on the window but the window sticker was still in the carwith some service records.

Overall this guy got a great deal.

We live in a world that justly requires cynicism, but thanks for bursting my bubble, I needed that.

:cry :cry :cry Why doesn't this happen to Me!!!! What a deal!!!

JRMaroon,

I think you are misinterpreting the replies as “negative”. This forum is a wealth of knowledge to help avoid the “hard knocks” by people who have already learned their lesson. I only wish I knew about this forum before I bought my 68 two years ago. I would’ve found out that I definitely paid too much and there were more issues with the vehicle that what was obviously on the surface.

I still consider myself a newbie and respect everyone’s advice. Please “let all of the air out of my balloon” if I’m going down a bad path. I would do no less for you.
