Grinding noise from the rear

When I'm starting out in it after sitting overnight I get a semi-cyclic grinding noise from the rear when turning a tight corner in either direction, may be coming from the right side. Can't tell for sure. As I drive it it tends to get better & go away but not completely.

The car had 11K on it when I bought it two weeks ago. Now it has 12,250. It's a plain 6 speed coupe.

From experience with my '73 I'd say it sounds like it might be a half shaft u-joint but with only 12,250 miles I have trouble believing thats the prob. Was there any "chronic" issues with a C5 that would cause this symptom?

thanks

You may have a Mustang or BMW stuck under the rear spring. They tend to hit the inside of the wheel when you corner.

;LOL

Seriously, it could be a wheel bearing, CV joint, or a warped rotor. I'd say a warped rotor. Have you done any hard braking / hard driving and then washed the car?? Cold water + hot rotors = warping. You'll have to raise the car up and then spin the wheel. If there is excessive play, then it is a wheel bearing. If it sounds like something being sanded, then it is from the brakes.

The sound could also be road junk. I had a small tree branch caught up in the rear end once and it made a nasty racket.

HI there,
I would suggest that you change your differential fluid and friction modifier.
The GM part numbers are in your owners manual.
The modifier may have broken down and the clutches may be chattering.
If this noise ONLY happens on tight turns, this may cure the condition.
If NOT, you may have to replace the clutch packages.
