I need some help!!!! When I go to start my car I just get a really loud grinding noise. I thought maybe it was the starter but the whole car seems to shake. Any ideas?? Flywheel?

  1. Starter is bad: Replace the starter motor.
  2. Battery is weak or dead: Test battery and charging system. Replace battery.
  3. Dirty or loose battery cables: Clean and tighten cables as required.

Ya, I'd think flywheel first. Easy to check, just a couple bolts hold on the shield, and you can leave that off :) Oops, I misunderstood. Did the car not start? A starter not fully engaging will nmake a nasty sound, but shake the whole car :confused

You have to remove the starter with the stock cover. Or get the tin snips as the starter goes through the cover. But Yea you can leave it off.

Starter or connections to it. :upthumbs

:w

well i can see all the teeth on the flywheel are fine. I got the starter tested and it was ok. They couldnt test the starter under load so maybe its the starter motor. The car started and ran great lastnight!!!

It didn't start? did it try to fire? maybe timing gear stripped. the grinding may be the chain slipping on the gear. ;shrug

YUP, give us a more detailed description of the problem and or reply to suggestions already submited ;)

well like i said before it makes a really loud grinding noise when trying to start. It does not start or try to turn over. It is a really loud grining noise and the car shakes. Thats the best way i can describe it. The starter is fine (got it tested yesterday) and there are no teeth broken on the flywheel. The battery is brand new and all connections are fine. I drove it the night before and it started and ran great. The next morning this happened. Im just looking for some ideas that can hopefully lead me to a solution.

Well after getting some more opinions the majority of people said it sounds like the starter was bad. So I took it to another place to get it tested. It turned out to be the starter. I got a full rebuild for less then half of the cost for a new starter. Put it all back together and the vette starts great! Thanks for the help everyone.

Jon nailed it :upthumbs the gear on the starter probably got ground down as a result of the bendix not forcing the armature out fully. Not all that uncommon. Think I got all that right :L
