When I'm shifting from 1st to 2nd under normal conditions it's shifts just fine, but If I'm getting on it when I go from 1st to 2nd, 2nd gear grinds, any idea what's causing this??
thanks

:confused

Thanks,
now I'll ask the DUMB question, how do I go about changing the oil?

Changing the manual trans oil>>

There are two thin-walled allen-type plugs on the transmission. One on the bottom (the drain), and one on the pass side (the fill). They are 17mm hex and are very thin-walled so be careful when breaking them loose, or they will strip (the allen hex part, not the threads). GM neglected to use anti-seize on them so they're probably frozen. It was a bear when I did mine but I used an extra jack to help keep the socket in there when removing the drain plug, and then I just took my time with a couple choice words thrown in for good measure to get the fill plug loose.

After you drain it, just fill it to where it starts running back out the fill hole (you'll need a hand pump to pump it in, available from most auto stores for less than $10).

Good luck,

PS: VetteLT193.... where the heck were you during Ecklers corvette gathering??? Did see you there. Me, Phil, and Mike were up in the front near the highway because we got there at 7:00am. It was a good day.

Dave, what did you use to get the bolt out of the tranny, mine were are so frozen I have not been able to get them off... tried every trick i can think of (including the wrench on wrench extra torque trick) with no avail... i am pretty sure i can get the drain one off, because of positioning, but i dont think i can get the fill off, so i am not even going to attemt to drain it.

the ecklers thing: My grandmother broke her hip, I made it all the way down to melbourne prepared for the show (took the corvette instead of the lincoln because of the show... the Corvette doesn't seem so easy to take on long trips anymore after getting used to the soft riding lincoln!) and wound up seeing her instead. Cozette, from Ecklers, said the show went well, and told me you guys parked up front. I hope you had a good time... I will be back soon enough, I have to check out that big block and your new 'Vette!

I used a 1/2" socket drive with a piece of pipe as a breaker bar. The big thing to watch is don't let the hex-head round off. The hole isn't very deep where the hex head goes in so when you put pressure on it it will try to jump outof the hole, rounding it in the process.

When you put them back in, put anti-seize compound on the threads so they're easier next time.

PS: Sorry to hear about your grandmother. Hope she's doing well.

Thanks for the help

One mo question:
What type of oil? How much? and How Heavy?
thanks

Oil>>

GM recommends thier special trans oil or 5w-30 engine oil for the ZF 6-speed transmission.

I used Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 motor oil. I believe it took about 3 quarts, although I can't remember exactly because my friend was yappin' the whole time. Just buy a case, and whatever's left use in your engine at the next engine oil change.

my drain plug was froze to I had to put a jack under the braker bar and used the weight of the car with the jack to brake it open.
