My '99 had the "no brake lights", except the center brake light, ailment. Bought a new switch at the local Chevy dealer for $42. My new switch was made in Poland.
The switch will "pop" out from the rear (with a little force from the front, pushing the assembly to the rear) and you can work it to the front and swap it out. Taking the dash pad off is not necessary.
