We replaced the cap, rotor, wires and plugs before this all happened. The coil was new, and the only reason why we replaced this is because he bought new plugs and wires. We can swap out the coil off of my car, although I have my doubts. I am going to check the wire routing one more time, to make sure the frustration hasn't clouded his thinking.

Craig

If you find the wires are on correctly, why not try putting the old parts back on and see what happens. It could be that one of those new parts (cap, rotor, plugs, wires, etc.) is bad from the factory (wouldn't be the first time that happened). If that cures it, then try replacing those items one at a time until it goes whacky again and you'll find the problem.

I gotta think it's something simple that's just slipped through the cracks.

Well problem solved thanks to my stupidity. However I did know enough to check it again the right way, and it is fixed.

Please let me explain... I was doing something, and I told Craig. "Hey Craig will you put some tape on the wires and write what plug they go to?" Craigs response "Yeah that is a good idea..." So he did and low and behold he doesn't know the difference between 2, and 4. Those wires were crossed...:(

So we took it for a drive and I still dont think it is as fast as his car... Is it because I have wide open three inch exhaust?? Or is it because my car is cursed, It still will not roll them over from a dig. It just doesn't have it out of the hole. But it is running good.

When I started it up it did do some funky idling for a couple of minutes but when I got back home from a ten minute drive it was idling right around 600, and sounded MEAN. I will still get a vid of it tomorrow, but sorry no flames! Thanks to all that helped me on this.

Should I even worry about timing or anything now or just drive it? It still hesitates a little but I wont really know until I get the exhaust and what not back on.

Okay...Now that we got that settled. :D

Wow man that was a treat to read that post. You got it running right!!

Put the exhaust on! You need back pressure.
Set the timing back to spec.
Let the computer make it's adjustments(may take a few miles of driving).
If after that it doesn't run better, add a bit more advance(2 degrees).

Congrats!!!

Well with everything else said, I think vettefan has a great brother :D I mean who would help with such an epsode, and then find the problem, whether or not I created it is beside the point. I am glad it is running, and no popping.

And he is right, i still have him from a dig

Well I still think you are worried... My rolling rockers came and he decided to not tell me they came till I found them tonight, and hes like oh yeah those came on monday....:( Suggestions guys For 800 it doesn't seem any faster if so it is hardly noticable.

Congrats GUYS :beer Happy to hear it was something simple, ususally is, but it sure is frustrating to go through it. Put it together, drive it! Fine tune as you go. Gert some enjoyment out of it, and quit worrying about kicking Bro's A$$ for a bit :L

Amen, brother! S*** happens; even to seasoned dudes. We're all here to call each other on the simple stuff, most of the time.

There IS a GOD!! The car runs!! Yahoo!! The light in the tunnel was NOT a train! Etc., etc.

The off-the-line may be due to differing R.E. ratios. Nice to see some brotherly competition.

:w

Yeah we did have a pretty good laugh about it during the drive. I belive we both have 2:73's or 2:79's, we both get similar gas mileage. So I dunno ;shrug

oh and another thing your slight hesitation is coming from the ECM relearning. contrary to popular belief it takes about 100 miles for it to relearn completely. everytime i reset my computer 100 miles later the car runs like a scolded dog.

Guys, congrats on fixing the problem.

I'm seriously considering selling my '88 and '83 Z28 to jump into and LT4.:D

Yeah well it has done it for about a year now so I don't know if that is the case, but tonight I am going to put my ECM from my brothers car back in and put his back in his car. We went for a ride in his car the other night it and it 0 miles on it and maybe ten minutes of running it and still pulled just like it always does if not better. But it will give me an excuse to drive it for 100 miles and see.

Well Mic I owe you one. You called it from the start, if I was old enough the first couple of rounds would be on me :beer. Thanks Mic.

hehe no prob :D first time i changed the plugs on my vette i forgot the firing order on the distributor. i started at the first wire below the plug-ins and she fired up and sounded mean as hell. i was like "Wow! just a tune up!" then i put it in gear and PoP BooM BaM PinG! Rut Roe! called my buddy up and got him to talk me thru the firing order. i had 3 wires crossed :L

we all learn! rule of thumb working on cars is Check and Recheck then Recheck again! keeps complications down to a minimum :D

free *Tip* set your fuel pressure to 45 psi and leave it there ;) make sure ALL your vacuum lines are good. reason your bro is pulling you out of the hole is i bet he has the 3.07 gears and you have the 2.59's check the RPO codes. if there is a G92 code then you or him has the 3.07 which is the "Performance Axle"

Yes I will look at the RPO codes. Should I set it at 45 with the vacuum line on the AFPR connected or disconnected.

I would, but in 87 I guess they added on OD light in the middle of the tach, an d with my bros ECM it stays on all the time.

I made another post, but does anyone know how to get that fricken Lock ring on the EGR tube? Do I have to use it, can I use anything else?

My car ripps out of the hole hard. Not sure why, but it does. His car just seems lazy. I am sure it could be do to the rebuild. Do you all think the changes made, increased his hp figure, and dropped torque?

Yeah I didn't notice to much with the ECM swap. It was nice though, to pull a whole shot with that "old" vette. I dont have the performance ratio. I think there was only two ratio's offered that year, the 307's and either 273's or 259's. We both run at the same RPM through various speeds. I dont think that is the issue. I will be totally honest, it doesn't want to get out of it's own way until 20 mph or so, where as to mine, when you romp the pedal, it goes sideways.

He has a throttle response problem, and he thinks the tires might be to grippy. I want to try to swap them and see if my car will turn them over.

Thanks to everyone for their help
