Thanks for the replies to my coated vs. uncoated question. Has anyone here actually had their starter get fried from the heat or know anyone that has had that happen to them?

Yes, you should install a heat shield in either case.

Preferably, you'd put some heatwrap or some type of insulation on anything that comes near the headers, like fuel and transmission fluid lines and wiring.

ThermoTech sells a heatshielding wrap that's self adhesive (think aluminized tape) that works very well in for that purpose.

Starter issues may or may not surface, but that is only part of the issue with the 'normal' high underhood temps of this car and the high plastic content of connectors et. al. This is aside from the performance gains, longevity and maintenance

I bought, installed and REMOVED a nice starter blanket. It did a great job of retaining heat at the starter! I have not tried the sheet metal type, which should allow cooling air to the starter. I now run w/o a heat shield, with a new hitorque.com mini starter. The GM mini died rather quickly.

I now consider headers w/o coating to be like dressing up w/o socks, but nice dress shoes. The hot, thin tubing, especially in wet climates can corrode rather quickly, requiring replacement in a few years.

Both issues speak to the false economy of not spending the extra bucks for the coating, IMHO. Whether additional parts to repair or solve header induced heat problems or 'premature' replacement of the headers, is their cash saved; or headaches? I suggest shopping for a deal on coated tubes to save cash.

Yea I can't afford 750 which I think it was last time I checked for tpis headers, guess i'll just leave it the way it is.

i got my TPiS headers w/ front Y pipe for 250 bucks. then again these were used and from a forum member on another site but for 250 bucks i couldn't pass them up.

no problems from the start yet....knock on wood

Hard to do. Mine were banged upon to try to increase plug boot clearance. If there is any markings, they're not visible.

Edmund, they're a GOOD thing. Save your nickels and dimes for this 'extra'.

That's the general consensus I'm getting here. When I do some serious mods this winter; I'm going with coated headers. If I've waited that long, I could wait a few more weeks and get the coated ones.

Well I'm, not stupid either. And I'm telling you $480 for Hedman LT headers is a RIP-OFF, PERIOD. As a matter of fact, IMO they are a rip-off AT ANY PRICE. Don't get them. I have no knowledge of Flowtechs, personal or via the grapevine. I can say Hooker is a pretty decent product. I have the Hoooker Super Comps #2149.

I'm not sure why but when I read this I started laughing my tooshy off!!

Coated headers from any manufacture has a affect on how long they live and reduce heat into the engine bay. The ceramic coating stops rust and contains heat inside the exhaust tubes.
If you decide on Hooker, FlowTech, Hedman..they use Jet Hot for the Coating"
You can also purchase your headers directly from JETHOT. They are on the web and they have some engineering data on what it does for you.

The painted headers are only for protecting them from rust during storge and shipping.

I have the long-tube coated Hedman Headers on my 87 and they are fine...no leaks and look great. I eliminated the cats and run straight pipes to the 2 end Borlas.
Unbelievable sound and improvement. Helps to have a lift to put them on.

I also eliminated the cats and run straight pipes to the rear Borlas.
Install helps if you have a lift.
The power increase is substantial, and I get no fault lights.
And....they look great!

ratorto I am interested what you did with your EGR system...did you keep it or remove it? Also what did you do with your AIR pump?
