Corvette
looking to buy
Just found your site. I'm an old (old) Pontiac guy but have always wanted to own a Corvette. I'm looking in the very late C4 (96 LT4) or the early 2000 C5's. Must be a manual. I came here to absorb as much information and wisdom as I can before making a purchase. My preference would be a nice 2000-ish ZO6 6 speed. Thanks for letting me in and for being here to help.

Mark

:welcome

The C4 drives and feels a lot different from the C5 so you probably want to test drive a couple of each before you decide which suits you best.

The '96 LT4 is a nice engine and only comes with a manual.
The C4 has a tighter cockpit and some find it hard to get in and out because of the side frame rails.

The C5 just has more room that a C4 and probably drives smoother.

Let us know what you decide to buy.

Thanks guys for all the welcomes. You mentioned the interiors of the C5 being more spacious and possibly easier to enter/exit. How did you know I was a portly (read that as overweight) old guy??? LOL. That will be a concern so I definitely need to try them on. I really like the style of the C5 and the fact that I would be starting out with the LS engine right off the bat. If I were to go with the C4, it would not be out of the realm of possibilities that I would eventually end up with an LS transplant in the future. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but I have always been a big block/big displacement guy. But have always desired a short stroke high RPM motor in something sometime. I've built 3rd Gen Trans Ams and Formulas (my last '73 TA was an 886 WHP single turbo monster) and am presently getting close to start up on my 5 year build, '63 Pontiac Catalina, twin turbo 406 Pontiac engine Gasser style street/ strip car. Being without a "fun" car to drive for over 5 years now, I need to get something to have fun with. I've always wanted a Vette and they C4's and early C5's are very affordable right now.
The driveline style of the C5 makes it difficult to swap power trains, hence the lea towards theC4's. I've got a 4.8 LS crank getting cryo'd and cut for a possible short stroke 6.0 block build right now. I'm doing that to have it just in case. If I go C4 I'll look hard at the LT4s to get the latest and greatest of the C4s and have a good old small block base to work with and the LT4s are a good engine to play with as I decide on later swaps.
Anywho. I want to learn everything about these Vettes so I can make good decisions (such as the interior fit etc) and get the most from my purchase right up front. Starting out right from the beginning with the best combination will make it easier and cheaper in the long run.
I'll add a pic or two of my TA and the present '63. Ya know ya has ta show off a little right??? LOL.

I'll add the TA pics in the next post.

The pics of the Catalina shows it assembled (far from done) for a car show I trailered it to. It was at that time set up with twin 750 blow thrus and set up with a home made front drive distributor, driven off the cam.

But I have since decided to change over to EFI and am modifying a Chevy rear cam phase sensor (looks like a distributor) to replace the front distributor so I can run sequential EFI and coil on plug.

Anywho. This is the TA I built.

This is a short vid I took at the strip on my way to tech. But I screwed up and did not have an up to date helmet and they would not let me run.

Just waned to show that I'm not a novice with cars and modifying them. This Corvette will be a fun street driver, hence the idea of a short stroke high winding fun street car.

OK, enough babbling. Again thanks for all the welcomes. I'm really stoked about doing this. As a matter of fact (sorry more babbling), I just found a 2001 ZO6, and a 2002 ZO6 for sale locally and sent messages to them both offering my 2008 G8GT as trade bait for them. Not sure they will want trades but you don't know until you ask.

So, as they say----"We're Off!!!!"

Welcome! Get a hold of the folks at Sun Country Corvette club out there on the West Side. They probably know of just the car you are looking for. Also check out ACE (Arizona Corvette Enthusiasts) on line. It's a web based non-club with lots of "members" all over the state. They get together informally almost every week, and love newcomers. They also will know of Vettes on the market. (I'm a founding member of ACE)

Thank you Catbert for that info. I've been thinking about looking up the local clubs but just never got that far. Those are two good contacts to investigate. Much appreciated.

Welcome to the :CAC

Looks like you do very good fab work...

I always liked the big Ponchos. That gasser '63 is just way cool.

Thanks Tom, your comment is very much appreciated. I'm starting to understand a little more about the LT4s. But the early C5's are very desirable as well. I have to keep researching. There's a local '96 C4 LT4 for sale and it is advertised as an automatic. Everything I've seen so far has said that all LT4s came with manuals?? I made one inquiry so far but no answer.

Mark

Just an update. Talked to the LT4 owner and he said he forgot to add the "manual" to the "trans" description. It is an LT4 and it's a really nice low mileage car. Black with a red interior. Low mileage as in under 40,000. I was not sure about living with a red interior so I passed on it. Although, at the $14,000 asking price it would be a great buy. Especially if the price could come down a little.
I found another in the city that had around 100,000 miles for $10,500. Black on black with several mods like headers, exhaust etc, all stuff I would do. It's at a resell dealer however and I would have to add about 9% for taxes. The other was owner sold and would not require a tax. However, the second modified car sold in one day and I inquired on day two--truly a dollar short and a day late, LOL!
I was able to look at a 1995 black with red interior 'vette at a local car show and the red interior has just enough black to offset the red. It was actually kind of nice, sooo. Time to go back to that first 'Vette and see what I can do.
Side note. I'm just short of my 64th birthday and my wife says I'll get into the car and never get out. Something about an inflated waist line??? Not all ALL sure what she means--but, if I get it or any 'Vette, it will be time to hit the gym. So the "Vette" will be good for my health.
Still trying to convince her of that one--LOL!

Pontiac/Vetter,
Welcome to the group.

I go back to the good old days of inexpensive high octane, and factory muscle cars which gave us more eggs in the basket to start with. ;)

As you see, I haven't given up my habits. ;)

Welcome to CAC....I, too, love the big poncho! Whatever you get you will like. As for the red interior in the C4, I loved mine. Love the red and with the black exterior...nice! [SUB][/SUB]
