Help. Any thoughts about this 63

Sounds like a reasonable price considering it is 95% original and well taken care of.

...but I always have to wonder what a car like this is doing at a vette salvage dealer.....

I would suggest you go over the car completely and take someone else along for a second opinion. The price is in the ballpark for the car so asked them how they acquired the car and go from there.

Good luck!

By-the-way, the add says Savage corvettes not Salvage.

Couple of things that I noticed:

First I noticed the engine photo did not show the master cylinder, the original type of MC for the 63 are rare and very expensive. Most used a replacement that had a bail wire or clip wire over the cover.

Second, I noticed no ignition shielding on the car at all.

Next, I would look closely at the valve covers, are they original or the flared covers.

Car overall appears to be in great shape, but same thing applies have somebody who is knows these cares go with you to check it out. especially the rust on the frame...

Good Luck,,,

All very good information. I just bought a '63 split and it appears to have had a 1965 replacement engine, intake and heads but has the correct serial and date numbers stamped on the front pad. I'm told that dealerships would commonly stamp the original numbers on engine blocks which were replacecd under warranty. Any thougts on whether this was done and if so how common a practice would it have been?

Thanks

Has rust been a huge problem for 63's? If so, where to look for rust? Also, should 63's have broach marks where the motor stamp is? thanks

stamping the block

I have never heard of a legitimate dealer "stamping" the block while replacing "under warranty." If it was a replacement block it would be stamped w/ CE and location of build and date- and the vin would not be there. Sounds like some one wanted more cash for the car and went to the trouble to fraudulently restamp so that they could say the preverbal "matching numbers!!!"

Look at the back of the block (pass side right above bellhousing) for a cast date ( (A= Jan, B=Feb) then day and single digit for year- That along w/ the cast number on the driver side will tell you where- what and when the engine was originally installed.

As far as rust on 63's- look at the trailing arms- where they mount to the frame and around the welds on the frame at the back of the car. Stick your fingers in the holes and feel around for parts that have flaked off.
The front part of the frame is usually in better shape believe it or not- due to oil leaks preserving the frame.
