I am looking at a custom chip for my 87 but I am not familiar with some of the terminology/questions. Please help!

do you want top speed limiter removed?
do you want power programming?
do you want firmer shifts?
maf size?
Torque coverter stall speed?
do you want the air pump disabled?

The rest of the quesitons I can answer.
The 87 is completely stock except the exhaust with no cats to magnaflows and headers going on in a couple weeks.
If you want to take a look at the form, it's here:

Please give me a clue.

Anything to make her go go go :D . Not sure exactly what you want. Top speed limiter removed, YES. Whatever power programming is would be a must. I would find out what exactly they do first. Firmer shifts are always a nice thing, I think. If you ran true duals, take the air pump off, so having it disabled sounds alright. Not sure what goes into this type of programming.

I was under the impression that the computer was not in control of the 700-r4 so programming the chip for firmer shifts would do absolutely nothing.

I was also told that exhaust mods don't effect the ECM to any large degree. When you start intake mods then you'll need a custom chip to go with your setup.

If you plan any intake mods in the future make sure you won't have to pay full price for a second chip.

do you want top speed limiter removed? - Yup (although I didn't know there was one)

do you want power programming? - don't think it applies to your car but answer "yes" anyway

do you want firmer shifts? - don't think it applies to your car but answer "yes" anyway

maf size? - 48mm??

Torque coverter stall speed? - I think it's around 2000??

do you want the air pump disabled? - yup

Hopefully someone will chime in to fill us in on the red bit.

:w

If the MAF and converter are stock, then the answers to the red bits would be "stock"

Here's one - call the person whose questions you need help understanding. If they can't or won't explain things to you then you know you need to go somewhere else.

Good stuff. Thanks a bunch. Exactly what I was looking for.

Am I alone in thinking you are about to waste some money?

I think he doesn't want to see you spend the money twice.

I wouldn't say a complete waste. I did notice a large SOTP improvement when I put my first chip into a stock car. I'm also looking at spending that money again since I'll probably need a new chip when I do intake mods.

That's why I wanted Shane to make sure something like TPIS's upgrade option was available to him.

Is a custom chip a bad idea?

Not really necessary unless you're modifying the intake, changing cams, etc. The only other reason would be if you're disabling the EGR (turn off the self test), or reduce the sensitivity of the ESC and that's simply to turn off the MIL (check engine or service engine soon lamp). Some of the older Hypertech type chips claimed massive horsepower gains over stock, playing with the timing curve, etc., but nothing you could really feel too much. Technology has come a long way since then, though.

You could have a custom chip burned to take advantage of your better flowing exhaust, but for the money, I personally think you're better served to stay stock. For the absolute best results with custom tuning you need a tuner with a chassis dyno to get your chip set up the best. A lot of guys use mail-order tunes with no problem though.

Well, I plan on leaving the mods with just headers, true duals, magnaflows, and an open lid with k&N for at least a year or so. I have just been cut off on my car budget due to the fact I am now engagement ring shopping:ugh !!
So I want to get a custom chip for these mods now. So I won't mind getting another one next year once i do engine mods.

Ditto on the "Congrats"! :beer

I just bought an engagement ring for LSA. Date set for 9/10. Definite dent in the Vette budget w/ that purchase yet well worth it! :D

Congrats Blackroxi!! My G/F keeps leaving sales fliers from Kay Jewelers on my EZ Boy. Do ya think she's trying to tell me something?

That she wants to get married soon. First choice is you.:L:L:L

I think the g/f is dropping major hints to you there with the fliers;) .

But thanks on the congrats. I haven't bought the ring yet, just in the initial stages. It is real different in my case. This came completely on my own. I actually took her to a jeweler this past weekend to look at options. I told her I wanted to take a small road trip with the vette. Nice 1 hour ride!
But a severe dent in the vette budget, jeff, you know the feeling! But honestly, a pretty good investment in the long run.

It's hard to please my 2 ladies! I have to buy something for each of them. This month my girlfriend gets a downpayment on a ring and my vette gets hooker headers! Drives me crazy! :J

Yeah, we're a little off the thread here but, you're right, both my ladies are pretty special. One's a little higher maintenance than the other tho.
