I have a 94 that has been stored for most of the winter. I try to start the engine about once a week and let it come up tp operating temperature to keep the battery charged etc. Last weekend when I started it , I got a flashing SYS on the display where the coolant temp etc is. Anyone have a guess as to the cause of this? Is this something to worry about, or will it go away when I get the car out and drive it a bit? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Flashing SYS

I had the same issue on my 96 coupe and it was the battery going bad and about to fail. I would take it in for a test. My bet it is about to go. Good luck and report back.

Same thing with my 93, checked the battery and it was bad. waiting for the weather to get better before I put a new one in and hope the sys light goes away.

SYS light

Likely the battery. The left 'gill' comes out very easily to permit battery replacement. Remove the torx screws at the wheel well then loosen (don't remove) the two bolts above the sill (in a very tight crevice) and below the 'gill' panel. You may need to grind an open-end wrench to thin it so it goes into the crack. Then the panel will come out very easily and the battery is accessible.

The battery is only 1 year old and seems to crank over the engine just fine. However I did discover that the volts seem to jump around between 14.1 and 14.7 in an erratic way. Could this be part of the problem? A friend of mine told me to put a trickle charge on the battery over night and see if that helps.

This may not have anything to do with the problem but I do know on my 91 that after three starts and no movement of the car above 2 miles and hour I get a light that says service traction control or something like that. Maybe you just need to take it for a spin. :upthumbs Just a thought!

In my C4 days, the "SYS" flashing meant the battery was about to give up.

Generally, this means that there are voltage variances that are out of tolerance. Time to have the battery, charging system and general electrical system checked. (bet it's the battery).

Oh, buy a battery tender and use it.
