I'm trying to get the play out of my upper column. I pulled the wheel and hub. When I get down to the turn sig. switch and unscrew it from the retainer it won't come out. How do you remove it and the upper bearing without destroying things. I must have missed something but can't figure what. Many thanks ahead of time. :confused

From your login, it looks like you have a 64 model?

I just fixed the play in my 66 by replacing the upper steering column bearing.

When you take off the wheel and get down to the plastic turn signal assembly, there should be a brass looking retainer in the center.

I just pulled that out (just inserted into the plastic assembly), then the bearing was underneath it.

The bearing just slides out as well (with a paperclip or some other tool).

Then replace the bearing with a new one and put everything back in reverse order.

That fixed my steering wheel play (my bearing was a mess).

I'm not positive about this, but try moving the turn signal lever to the left turn position to allow the switch to be removed.

Hey guys, your info was right on target. Pulled out my bearing with ease(what was left of it). No wonder there was so much play. This is why I love this forum so much, great help and advice for every question. Many thanks again!! :CAC
