I decided to take the Vette to work today it has been unseasonalbly warm the past week and it rained heavly yesterday so all the salt was washed off the roads. On my 5 mile trip to work I noticed something funny. Next to the speedometer SYS would pop up every time I got on the throttle or let off. I read in the owners manual that means something may be wrong with the electrical system. The car is a 96 LT4 the conditions were 38 degrees the car did not warm up for a very long time and as I mentioned it is only five miles to work. Also the last time I started the car was two weeks ago. When I started it then I think the car was running rich because it smelled a little like gas. When I drove home I warmed the car up for a long time and I did not get the SYS. Does SYS mean I was getting a code and if so how can I check it without a code reader. Any help would be great.

Was the car running rough like a plug wire might be loose? A misfiring cylinder will put unburned fuel into the exhaust, hence the smell and light.

Seems like every time this SYS topic comes up it winds up being a bad battery (setting CCM DTC code).

I think it may be the battery as I havent driven it much in the past few monthes.

Somebody beat me to the punch. Throw your battery on a good overnight charge and see what happens.

SYS light

Had exactly the same symptom; fun accel = flash of the sys light.
New battery = no more sys light.
