Hi Guys/Gals

First time Vette owner here

This is a great forum that has helped me already but I need a bit more help if anyone can???

I just got an 89 Conv. and the temp climbed to 270 so I shut it down, let it cool off and took it to a dealer. They hooked it up to the computer and told me they sent the signal to turn the primaey Rad. fan on...but it didn't come on and they didn't have nor could they get one without looking for it used or maybe aftermarket.

After reading your fourm for 15 mins. I went out to the car and played with the wires on the relay and now the fan comes on at 230 but the temp. still climbs to 270 then I shut it off.

The car has 63k and is in fair shape. It passed Maryland inspection, but it needs about 1,000.00 to 2,000.00 to make it "real" right.

I'm hopeing that its a bad Thermastat or something else minor.

Any ideas?

Thanks again for your knowledge.

i know that when my car did that it was cuz the thermostat was opening too late

Where in MD are you? I can recommend a great mechanic with lots of Vette experience who is really good at determing what "needs" fixing versus what can wait.

I realize that won't help your immediate problem, but it might help deal with the $1-$2k stuff.

Near Easton...Bob Smith ripped my one and didn't even kiss me

Just an idea.....check between the radiator and the air condensor. Sometimes if it goes long enough a small "forest" can collect between the two and cause the radiator to get no outside air. The car's temp will then climb.

You guys are all great and i thiank you all...i have many more ?'s about my Vett and i'm sure glad to find such a great group of friendly smart folks.

Red89,Hi, By all means check between the radiator and condensor. I recently purchased a squeeky clean 88 and after clicking on to this site I figured I should check that area. I could not believe the crap that I found. The radiator was at least 75% blocked in an otherwise super clean car. It's worth the trouble to check it out. Muddywaters

Byron,

I live in the DC Metro area and have only been up in Marlyand a few times. Have you tried Criswell Chevrolet in Gaithersburg? Or you may even want to give Tony's Corvette Shop a call. They too are located in Gaithersburg and I have heard awesome feedback from members about the quality of work from them.

I have also been to their shop and was extremely impressed with the shop and Tony himself. Give them a call, describe your problem to them and it's possible they might be able to give you some guidance:

Muddywaters says "By all means check between the radiator and condensor."

Do I need to pull the radiator to check and clean this...not a great tool turner here.

Hi Red89, No, you do not have to pull the rad. On my 88 there is a cover over the rad. and condensor . there are several screws around the perimeter of the cover. It should be similar on yours. It's not too difficult, but a shop manual would help. Muddywaters

Hm. You're across the bridge from my shop, which is in Pasadena. Might be a bit far to go.

There's a Corvette club that meets in Annapolis at Tate BMW/Chevy off Rt 50 as well. Might be your closest club.

Yeah I lived in Bowie for about 10 years and Landover before that...I've been to Tonys web site...I'd love to go by with 2,000.00 to play with but trying to do just what I need for now to keep it running cool.

Thanks again everybody...GREAT forum:w

I checked between the radiator and condensor, and yes there was some crap and leaves about 3" wroth... but still overheating.

Tomorrow it gets a Rad. flush and a T-stat...after that???Timing? or you tell me?

Also dang!!! I found a spare tire under the car in the back!!! WOW when you don't have an Owners manual "yet" little things seem to just pop up huh. :-)

Thanks again for all the help.

Thanks everyone...Its cooling now!!! T'stat and a flush and getting the crap out from in front of the Rad did it!!! again thanks for all the great help!!!:beer

Cooler Running

I had same problem on my 90. I installed a Hypertech Thermomaster chip and a 160 Thermostat. Total time 30 minutes. I also put "Water Wetter" in radiator. Results are that my car runs so much cooler its unbelievable. Also the chip made the car run with alot more power. I also installed a K & N filter. These mods are worth every penny. Just think cool looking and cool running.
