I am planning on putting some Hooker Super Comps on my 76 L-48. As I am currently rebuilding the front suspension both sets of control arms are off.

Is the header install any easier with front suspension off, does it make any difference? Or should I just do the headers at my convenience instead of waiting to do the suspension installation until after I have installed the headers?

It couldn't make it any harder, but I doubt it really matters. When I installed the hookers on my 79, you pull starter, and all spark plugs, raise front end, they go from the bottom upwards. Once the starter and plugs are out it takes about 15 min. to get them in both into palce, and "started" to the heads. One Thing I found was the bolts to secure them to the head are hex. I had a much better, and easier install with the hardened allen bolts. I took a hex wrench - length wise and slipped a gear wrench (racheting wrench) on the allen/hex wrench. The primaries on the headers swell out fast from the mounting holes. That makes the "angle" of the standard hex bolts (they come with the headers) very difficult to get a good rotation and torque on. Tighten bolts in a slow - sequence matter.

;stupid

can't add anything to the above, Allen bolts do make it easier, I run my wires over the valve covers, usually get a "universal set" and cut to length myself

ps I wonder why the agree smilie says Im with stupid?

"I'm with stupid" and the damm thing is pointing right at me, Not the first time, but I thought you were my bud - boss:mad

I hope you don't take it hard, I was agreeing with everything you said. I just wonder why the smilie says "I'm with stupid" instead of something like ""thats right" or "on the money"

Nah, I was totally kiddin, I clicked on a beer face also, but it didn't show up. cause thats what I am doing this sunday, Bucs up 10-zip, in a must win. I know what ya ment. I'll tell you one thing I realize with owning a vette. It is litterally a love / hate relationship. Got basically the motor done, brought it in friday for some tweaking on the dyno (at the wheels) changed carb, he may do some re-jet work, if needed, and see if I have the best intake set-up etc. Anyhow, the point is.... he didn't finish, and I have not had the car all weekend. It's been awesome weather 85 degrees, and not a cloud. Last week I was cussing the car left and right cause I was having a tuff time on the p.s. pump install.

It's kinda like a good woman, she goes away for a few days, and you kick your feet up, crack a cold one, and enjoy the break, then in a lil bit you miss the hell out of her, yeah the my best vette analogy!! :cool :beer :beer

hex head bolts

So where can I get a set of allen bolts? And did you guys use any gasket/permatex type material between the headers and the engine?

B

they are available at almost any auto parts store, I think I got mine at discount auto. They are in a package made by Mr. Gasket co. specifically labeled header bolts 3/8 corse thread, black, and about 6 or seven bucks. No need for any sealent, I did however use fel-pro gaskets, but the header set comes with a decent pair of gaskets from hooker.
