Ignition shielding assembly

progress

I found how the side shields bolt onto the exhaust manifold. (I found that some of the brackets had a different kink in them, which allowed me to align with the bolt). So ... I'm ok with that now, I also found the impossible to see hole on the block where 430 and 662 bolt into. So I think I am in pretty good shape.

What about where the spark plug wires go between the back 2 plugs and the front 2. Seems like it just drags across the exhaust manifold. Do I just pull them out as far as I can away from there, as I make the bridge between the front and the rear? (seems like they still touch the manifold.

They run along the side of the block (between the block and the exhaust pipes), covered by parts 5002 and 5003 and clip into those J-clips that attach to one of the center oil pan bolts (don't know which one). You'll have to trial and error that one. Have to run these while under the car. Both pairs of front plug wires then run behind the motor mount on each side (between the motor mount and the block). I find it easiest to run these front ones starting at the spark plugs working back to the distributor. Easier to get behind the motor mounts that way.
Make sense?

I am not sure what you mean by the "J" clips. I only have one part left, it's called the Ignition Shield J-Nut, and I don't know where it goes. So if I understand, the shielding for the front 2 sparkplugs does not actually serve an purpose because the sparkplug wires do not go through the shielding?

The J-clip is part 915K in the picture. What number is the J-nut if it's in the picture.

I don't have that in my kit. The J-Nut is part 0168 in the Corvette America catologue. I don't see it at all on the Paragon diagram, and I haven't got a clue where it goes.:confused

I'll post a couple of pics later, but I believe the J-nut goes on the passenger side, rear vertical shielding at the bottom. The rear passenger side plug shielding piece bolts to it with a wingnut, attaching the bottom of the vertical piece with the horizontal plug shield.

Here's a scan of the basic wiring routing for my 64. I believe your 66 is similar:

Here is how all the shielding goes together:

now THAT'S what were talking about - the AIM page that shows you plug wire routing and where brackets # 14 and 12 per the diagram attach to the block. Gotta have your AIM for much of this stuff or you're dead in the water . . . . plus, JohnZ will often refer you to certain pages in the AIM when he dispenses his sage advice, you need the bible in order to follow along with the preacher!

Oh yeah, that works for me :). I'll have to get one of those bibles! Thanks a lot. :w I hope to finish the job today... then I'll see if I can get it going again :ugh

if you are anal about routing the plug wires in the order the AIM specifies (ex. 4-2-6-8 from the outside in on the p-side of the engine running down from the top shield) it will actually make your life easier . . . .

Hey that's something I never noticed about the J nut there on the passenger side.. OPPS.. Looks like I need to make a change...myself.. Man and I try so hard to be right all the time... oH I forgot I'm a man not a woman so I guess I'm wrong more than I like to admit... Dave..

DONE!!!! Thank you all for your help. It's on and looks great :D. I put the new resistor in and she started up fine. I now have a timing problem though :ugh . When I moved the coil to where it was supposed to be, I had to turn the distributor a bit counterclockwise. The timing is now off and I should turn it clockwise, but the vacume strikes the coil preventing me from turning it. Is this something I can fix myself (I'm a novice)?

Also, one last question on the sparkplug wires. Do the wires for the 2 front driver's side plugs rest on top off the "A" frame? They are long enough to go under the "A" Frame. I don't have anything that allows me to attach anything to the centre oil pan as was mentioned earlier.

Sounds like your distributor is a tooth off. As for resting on the "A" frame are you talking about the upper A arm? If so yes the plug wires should not be touching this all of the wires are hidden and those wires normally are only long enough to go thru the lower V shielding and clip into place via a clip that holds the two wires close to the block. Dave..

Yes, I think that is the upper A arm. I'll have to se what i am missing for hardware, I will take a good look next time I see one with the shielding. At least for now none of the wires are touching the exhaust manifold. As for the distributor beiing a tooth off, is that something I can adjust myself (ie:simple)?

I'll take some pics tomorrow considering I don't have much else to do... No job=lots of free time...
