Intake Manifold Recommendation - Torker?

Hi everyone

Would like to get your thoughts on intake manifold selection. 1969 coupe has 1974 454 motor with a cam, headers, 0.030" over. Runs pretty good but is way undercarbed......only has a 600 cfm on it.

So I picked up a nice used Holley 750 double pumper (list no. 80508) which should help. Engine still has stock intake manifold (with a 1" adapter for carb). Am debating whether to keep stock manifold or get a more performance oriented manifold.

It looks like hood clearance will be an issue in manifold selection. Apparently none of the Edelbrock Performer series will fit under my hood, only the Edelbrock Torker has adequate hood clearance. But it is a low rise design........will that offer much improvement over my stock manifold?

So what do you think: stock intake, Edelbrock Torker, or something else?

Thanks! :beer

Ernie, is the Torker an open plenum? if so, that is designed for more top end performance. a dual plane will give you much better streetabilty.

The first thing you need to decide is if you're willing to change the hood on the car. If you're not, you're only manifold choices are OE, which really suck, or the Edelbrock Torker II which doesn't suck that much but really is not a great intake.

If you are willing to change the hood to one with more clearance, then the Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap is the best choice.

Also, do not assume that 600 cfm is "way undercarbed". My guess is somewhere between that 600 and 750 cfm is what you need. Keep in mind that Holley DPs are exceedingly difficult to tune for street use...not impossible, but a challenge. Unless your engine is quite radical, I'd sell the 750 Holley and buy then properly modify a Quadrajet.

For what's worth ; I've dyno'd the factory cast iron 454 , verses a torker. The low rise Torker is good for 15 HP over the factory at all rpm over 1500 ; and good for 25 hp at peak.
Don't worry about losing bottom end , unless you go to a longer duration cam.

As you shop for BBC intake/carb brand ... first make sure you match the intake to your BBC heads ... oval or rectangular ports.
