79-L-82

Guest
I want to replace the intake on the L-82 while I am cleaning up the engine and compartment.

I'm looking at a couple of different options.

My plans are for Hooker sidepipes next year.
I currently have a Holley 650dp and smog stuff removed except for the cat which will be leaving when I get the hookers.

Some day aluminum heads, but; that may be WAY down the road.

So Edelbrock Performer EPS, EPS Air Gap, RPM, RPM Air Gap or I was also looking at the Holley Systemax I and Systemax II which would come already with heads. (though, I really wasn't planning on a cam since I've heard that the L-82 cam is OK.

Any opinions on these intakes and / or the Systemax II?

I'm assuming that the RPM and RPM air gap will fit under the L-82 hood with a drop base air cleaner. (That's what I've heard at least)

Thanks in advance.

I've got the rpm air gap and like it. On the 81's it fits with a drop base, w/ 2.5 in KNN filter.

I'd buy it again.

I'll get you a pic, but it might not be till tuesday evening.

A 625 Demon sits atop the intake.

Check your hood/air clearer clearance carefully when considering any of the RPM or Air-Gap intake. The current Edelbrock catalog states under the Performer Air-Gap, Performer RPM, and Performer RPM Air-Gap that the intakes "will not fit under stock Corvette hoods".
The dropped base air cleaner will certainly help, and you can gain some additional room by using a very short air filter element (like 1-2"). But that short air filter element will be more restrictive and may very well defeat some of the high rpm flow that the intake will afford.
I'm currently using a Performer Vortec and Holley 650 on the 350 in my 1979. In the past I used a regular Performer intake. Both work OK for hood clearance.
Don't know about the Performer EPS - it's a 1/4" taller that the Performer.
Specs from the Edelbrock catalog (approx height @ carb):
Performer 4.05"
Performer EPS 4.27"
Performer RPM & Performer RPM Air-Gap 4.73"

i'll agree with a short filter. I went thru 3 trying to get a good fit. 3 in was way too tall, and 2 in barly left any space between teh filter top and carb. 2.5 in filter does teh trick. I plan on eventually switching to an extreme lid to free up a little more air flow.

Craig 1979: Is your Holley 650 a double pumper (model 6210?) or does it have vac. secondaries (model 4175)?

Do you know the height of the stock intake compared to the mentioned Edelbrocks?

Currently I have the stock intake and there is an adapter on there for the Holley.
It is nearly 1" by my eyeball. I already have a drop base on there and a 3" cleaner.

Also, does anyone have an opinion on the Holley Systemax intakes? Height on them?

Ive got a RPM Air Gap, K&N 2.5 air cleaner on my 73..carb is a mighty demon 650 (went with a "mighty" instead of a "speed" demon because of my cam duration)
