I noticed something peculiar today while I was polishing the driver's side intercooler on my tt. I had removed it to make the job a little easier. On the side nearest the plenum look near the throttle body linkage on the upper corner. This may be visible if you look from the passenger's side up over the plenum.
Anyhow, what I found on the upper corner of that flat surface an engraved set of numbers. Mine says "422" and directly below it is "502". It doesn't have any resemblance (as far as I know) to the car or year because my car is #37 from 1987.
Please check this intercooler and give us some feedback!
