Welcome to the Corvette Forums at the Corvette Action Center!

interesting response and a discouraging one

I have been in the engine business for over thirty years and am currently an engine builder for one of the big multi-car Nextel Cup teams where I have been for the last 14 years. The reason I ask is I have observed a lot of sloppy unnecessary machine work performed over the years that did more harm than good. Most of it was due to poor choices from inexperience or just not knowing the right thing to do. In fact one of our other engine builders was going through a friend's 1964 Corvette engine as a side job a while back and I just cringed when I saw all the "improvements" he planned to add to the job. I would like to find some small way to get involved where I could review folks engine project plans and maybe offer some helpful guidance. I would really like to get involved with folks that are most interested in preserving factory original because I believe a lot of important history is permanently lost by unknowing uncaring automotive machine shops. I wonder if there is sufficient interest in this sort of thing.

Thanks, Greg

just stay right here on the furom. Very rare if somebody starts a project, especially a major one like rebuilding a motor and they don't bring it up or start asking advice or suggestions, or give a progess reprt. Chime in with your years of experience and I'm sure we can all benefit :beer

Glad to hear you got this thing working, Barry. I've been following this thread and believe me, my heart went out to you. You're a very patient guy. I would've snapped long ago!
Congrats on getting this up and running. Now you can get the car off to your painter and hopefully start to enjoy the fruits of your time and labor this season. -John

Hi john
thanks :)

believe it or not, i'm probably about the most impatient person you would would ever meet but sometimes you need to force your self to muddle thru things no matter how frustrating it gets. I was ready to give up lots of times, but realized I coudn't for onne very simple reason........ if I didn't find the answer and get it fixed it wasn't going to get fixed. It was that simple.
I refuse to take this car back to any local mechanics so it's solely up to me with the help of all the generous people on here.
once I realized that reality, it made me keep working at it until I got it solved because I refused to accept it as not working.
I think i've lost half my hair since buying this car! ;LOL

Greg,

Good to have you on-board!

Barry,

The Wife had me doing some in-house painting. Have not posted. Looks like things worked out well. Congrats!

still working on the new house, huh Paul :)

seems those little jobs just never end do they?

Greg: YES!! There definitely is a lot of interest in getting it done right. I'm setting here with a well used stock out of the factory not machine shop touched engine. It's got a lot of miles on it. I did a refresh a few years back without machine shop help which it probably needed but it purred like a kitten until I lost something in the clutch assy. I had to park it until right now. I'm ready to pull it next week. I'm like a lot of others out there, I don't have the foggest idea where to take it. It's a 327-300hp in a 65. I want to keep it stock - numbers matching. I've never been disappointed in the go it had. Fine with me. Too bad you are on the other end of the US. A few questions: Does the block have to be decked. Stainless valves. line bored. What brand of pistons. New bolts throughout. I could keep going on and on. I'm looking for a re-manifacture not a rebuild. What should I look for in a machine shop. I'm scared to death.

I could shurely use some help. Thanks - Rollin

Barry,
It starts with a little question: "Would you mind painting the dining room?" Sounded simple enough....But!

new paint=new overhead light=new pictures=new glass-paned door=new dining room table=new hutch=new upright cabinet.

I am now hearing hints of painting the living room??

might be easier to leave retirement and go back to work Paul. work might be more relaxing and less work, not to mention less expensive than buying all the new items and furniture for the "paint the room projects"! ;LOL

Great Rollin, let’s do it and see what happens; PM any details you wish to remain confidential. Are you OK with keeping the thread on radar in order to gauge interest; maybe start a new thread though? I’d like to begin with a statement followed by a few brief questions. I built 41 800 HP engines in 2005; I won once and collectively as a company our engines won 10 Nextel cup races last year. Corvettes are a hobby and I am only interested in a reconstruction of factory original with a goal toward preserving as much original content as possible. My interest in Corvettes was recently rekindled so I bought a C5 convertible new and then soon bought a C4 for a bad weather day driver. There is hopefully a BB C2 or C3 in my future if I can find a fairly good original one that has not been doctored. I would be happy to try to assist you with your 327 project to see if we can achieve good results accross the miles. Please supply what you know about the following:

1) Any previous history of your 327-300
2) Details of what was done when it was last apart.
3) Do you have the time and resources to do any assembly or would you prefer to have it assembled?

Regards, Greg
