HI,

The cigarette lighter in my 74 was all rusted. I've changed it for a new one. changed the fuse. Then when I've tried to connect my 300 Watts Inverter to plug some computer external speakers to be able to listen to my IPOD in the Car it was working like a charm until I start the car.

When the car is not running. no problem. but when the car is running I always got the interference that comes in the existing radio system and now the cigarette lighter.

What's up with that???

No it was not working at all with the old rusted plug. So no way for me to know if it was working good before or not. Is it normal?

I know some will say I need to buy some new spark plug wires with noise supression.

Will those help?

Yeah that might. Do you still have "points"?... might want to change that (Pertonix, etc) That would be an improvement in ares other that the noise.

An easier way might be to buy a noise filter. You can find them at car stereo stores and departments. (many radios come with one), They are not very expensive. If you haven't seen one, its usually a small black plastic box approx 1"x2"x2" in has a 12V (+) and (-) input and a filtered (+) and (-) output. You could try putting this inline between the inverter and its 12v plug.

Thanks, I'll check for a noise filter then. And yes I still got points. Just put some new ones 2 weeks ago. The car works very good. I prefer keeping my points. I don't want to have to change my mecanical tach. It's working fine right now so i'll keep the points system.

The Pertronix change will have no effect on the mech. tach drive. Its just a small box that fits under the cap in place of the points.

I'll bet you a buck 2 nintynine that the noise filters won't help a bit. I've been chaseing the same type of problem myself, been there done that, no differience at all. Good luck. OH YEA, I also put on new stainless steel braided sparkplug wires.

MMM. in that case my best bet would be not to use my cigarette light to power any 12V accessories and just buy myself a nice CD or MP3 player to put in there.

Sounds like an RFI issue.

Since you are not running the iPod through your radio and/or car speakers, the inline noise filter under the hood won't do anything for this issue. I'd guess you have a couple different possibilities as to your noise. Mostly all of it would come from your iginition. There are complete kits that are supposed to block or greatly reduce the RFI being emitted. Here is one of them...

The square part at the top is the piece that I find to be missing the most often. I'm pretty sure you can also buy most of the pieces separately.

Another thing to check is... some AC inverters have leads/alligator clips that allow you to connect directly to the battery. Try hooking up right to your battery and then doing your check. If you still get noise, you know the issues is not your lighter socket.

And the only other thing I can think of is to use a better cable to go between your iPod and speakers. Or try a different set of speakers, as the ones you are using may not have enough magnetic shielding.

Orrrrrrr, you could simply have a/some bad ground(s). But I don't think a bad ground is going to give you the symptoms you are describing.

I've already got the top part on my car. The chrome sheild that goes on top of the distributor cap and it's not stoping anything. First thing I'm gonna try is new sparq plug wires that are made with RFI Suppression.

Hopefully that will help.

It certainly won't hurt!

Well, I've installed a new set of spark plug wires with RFI suppression and it did solve my problem. I no longer have any inteference coming from the cigarette lighter. I can now play my Ipod in the Car.

Thanks for the suggestions.
