Is this common?

I was at the car wash and a gentleman with a 07 Vette and I struck up a conversation.His remote opened my door,but my remote wouldn't open his door.Is this a common occurance.?

Kind of off topic, but when I was a kid, my Dad had a Mercury Cougar, and my Mom had a Ford Crown Victoria LTD. My Dad's door key to his Cougar would open the door of my Mom's Crown Vic, but the Crown Vic's key would not open the Cougar's.
