have a return spring?
1985 Coupe. I have to pop the throttle whenever I come to a stop. It is idling up about 1800 - 2000.

There is a built-in spring on the throttle body, but I doubt if that's the problem. More likely it's dirty throttle plates or an Idle Air Control (IAC) problem. More information required.

The next time it idles high like that open the hood and check if the throttle has returned to its resting position. It should be easy to tell, since the throttle is a fixed length there should be no adjustment. I agree with ken, prolly a dirty TB.

Like what?
This is the car I got recently, and finally got the title for it. The first time I have driven for any length of time was today. It has had some motor work but, because of the way it was acquired, I really have no way to find out what all was done. From receipts in the car it looks to at least have a cam put in. What, I don't know.
When I start it cold, it takes four or five tries before it will stay running. The idle will be about 1k rpm, but it immediatly drops down 'til it dies. Probably takes 8 to 10 seconds for this to happen. Can't hit the throttle or it will die. On the fourth or fifth time it will go on up to 1500 and stay there. It kinda has a tendency to surge, 1200 to 1500, until it gets warmed up.
After I get the car moving, but let my foot off the pedal, it will come down to 1200 to 1500 because of the load. If I push the clutch the idle will go up to 1800 to 2000. If I pop the throttle, it will come back down to 800 or so.
I am not being exact on the rpm figures, because I was driving in traffic. I didn't have too much time to be watching the tach.
After I get it warmed up and pop the throttle, it will idle all day at 800 or so. It only idles higher if I push the throttle, and it always comes back down when I pop the throttle.
I hope this makes sense Ken....;LOL

It always idles high like that. Any time I push the throttle. And no, it is where it would be for that rpm. I can push it closed and it will idle back down.

So are you saying the actual throttle linkage is binding somewhere. Have you checked inside the Throttle Body for a build up, that would prevent the butterfly from closing all the way?

I haven't spent too much time on it. Doing other things to get the thing road ready:D. I knew it was happening, it just didn't bother me until today after having had it on the road.
I will have to pull the throttle cables off and see what it does then. I am kinda leaning towards Kens idea. Something gummed up. It did sit for at least 4 months before I got it. Who knows how long before that.

You might try plugging a scan tool in to read the TPS voltage and IAC counts as well as checking for DTCs. Verify the "check engine" light works (some morons pull the bulb out, especially if it's a used car wholesaler). Cleaning the throttle body may help, but check the basics before blaming the OBD system. Check for vacuum leaks (common for TPI systems) as the ECM will go crazy trying to idle the engine down.

Something else to consider:you mentioned that in the receipts you thought the cam might have been changed, see if it was and if so, find out the specs on it.

Take a logical approach to the problem. Simply guessing will accomplish nothing and cost you $$$

Finally got warm enough for me to take a look at this. Turns out the cruise cable was out of adjustment. Now idling at a smooth(well:D) 750.

That is great to hear. It is wonderful when these things get fixed.

Yeah. Now I just have to fix the other 2000 little things it needs! ;LOL Ah, the joys of buying a used car...

Yeah but that is better then most things.

Oh, I know.
I have had this thing since the middle of November, and had it running within two days. But because of problems getting the title I have just NOW begun driving it.
I DO have the grin on. You couldn't knock it off.:D

Suprizingly, ever since I bought it I have seen Corvettes everywhere, and wave at them! But the second I get behind the wheel of MY Vette, there are none to be found!:Steer:w

I am just curious how did you aquire it? I just have to ask.....

Well, I bought it off of eBay. Decent price. $4150. It's in a lot better condition than others I was watching. 75K miles. Paint is ;shrug, but the body panels are straight. Interior is pretty clean. No tears or anything. Dash WORKS!
And it has a strong motor. It will light the tires on command :D.
I bought it from a bailbondsman who was trying to recoup his money. He had repossessed it from a client that couldn't pay their bill. The client had never changed the title to his name. It wound costing the bondsman almost $600 to get everything in order. I tried everything I could to keep him from spending that money, but the Oklahoma Tax Commission wouldn't touch the title the way it was. But everything is in order now.
