I've had my C5 for 2 years and up until today I've always avoided driving it when it looked like rain! Well today it was a little cloudy but the forcast just called for a 30% chance for the afternoon. I office in a 20 story building and a guy whose office faces west came in and said that it looked really stormy out west. By the time I got to leave the office the bottom dropped out and we got a lot of rain in a very short time. My car handled it really well and when I got it in the garage I found out it was all still there! So much for the myth that they melt when rained on!:L

They can handle rain just fine. Traction control and a good set of tires and you'll be good to go. ;)

The objection I've heard from some about driving in rain has more to do with what's in the rain when it hits your car's finish- particulates, air-borne components of smog, dust, etc. These can play havoc with a car's finish over time. A convincing argument for regular washings.

Now, driving on snow- that's a different story for a Corvette.

I just made a trip to Texas from Delaware with my garage queen and you're right it won't melt. It will however make it a mess to clean. I got caught in a downpour just outside Knoxville, TN. The only rain encountered in my 3,600 mile trip. It handled well in the rain with only one warning that the traction control was active. Also made a stop at THE museum.

Not only dangerous but oh those salt and and sanded roads - what a mess.

Sand & salt don't mix well with any Corvettes.Lets hope we don't see a post from someone from the north state "ya ,driver her year round with chains''

Got that figured out the first weekend I drove the 03. Museum delivery on a Thursday then hang around for the weekend. The 800 mile drive back home with the new car was mostly in the rain.
In fact, we can't seem to take the 03 on any road trips without it getting rained on. :eyerole
Anybody living through a drought? I'm starting to charge for my rain making services! ;)

I avoid driving in the rain because I hate being stuck on the side of the highway with a wet opti-poop.

And what's in the air on a nice dry day in bright sunlight?

Once it has rained for a few minutes, there should be very few particulates, dust, sand, whatever in the rain esp close to the ground. And no bright sunlite to bake your paint and dashboard with UV and IR... Whatever grit and dust were on the roadway should be rinsed off into the storm draims.

What the typical waxer is saying by 'i never drive in the rain with my baby' is that I am so special owning a Corvette, I will drive any sort of beater in the rain and suffer just so you know how special I am.

Then I will go home and fall to my knees and beat my forehead against the garage floor in front of my Corvette, ie, just before I go buy more wax and tire shine...

Remo stores his car at my house in the winter and what he doesn't know won't hurt him. ;LOL

Rain has never been a problem with the Opti unless something is missing or loose from the inner fender panels. My 92 is my daily driver - rain or shine - rain has never caused me any problem.

The only time I ever had a moisture problem with the Opti is when the car cold soaked (temps below 40) in a garage for three days with high humidity (90%). Every piece of metal on the car was covered with dew - inside and out and under the hood. Moisture got in to the Opti then but a hair drier took care of that.

The very same suspended particulates. Absent rain, these will find their way to the surface of you car in the form of dust. :W So, it's going to find it's way to your car even if you leave it in the garage for extended periods of time.

True, but even after it's been raining for a few minutes, all that stuff that's been rinsed out of the air will now be lying on the ground for you to drive over and splash your car with.

LOL- look, my Vette is a daily driver. It gets rained on frequently. The way I see it, this gives me an excuse to spend some quality time with the Vette washing and polishing it. And, no, my Vette shows no signs of starting to melt in the rain. :L

Won't melt - understood. But since I don't have to drive it, I guess it will always be a garage queen. Call me neurotic - wait a minute, I am neurotic.

Yes, Remo, but they're such pleasant, harmless neuroses you have. Well, at least until we get into February, then they become a bit unpleasant. :W

It might help this coming year if your "garage queen" actually stayed in your garage- that way, you could visit it to relieve the stress of not driving it during your New England winter. Just a thought.

I think that how you drive your car, when you drive your car, how often you drive your car should be left entirely up to you. I know they will not melt in the rain. And yes mine stays parked if it looks like rain. Reason being is that with the kind of crazy drivers on the road now-a-days, even taking the vette out for a spin on a sunny day can be a real challenge when it comes to avoid these morons. It only gets worse when it is raining. Be sides, I can afford to own a beater for a daily driver and let the vette sit at home in the garage waiting for the nice weekend cruses.

In the North we only get to drive for 6 months so rain or shine away she goes. On the other hand with less than a million people spread out over an area bigger than Texas we don't worry much about air quality unless a farmer is burnung stubble
