K&N Air Filter Question

I have a 1991 Convertible, and I replaced the stock air filter with a K&N filter designed to fit in the stock airbox. I have seen, probably on this forum, pictures of an oval-shaped K&N filter mounted directly to the throttle body, effectively eliminated the airbox and duct leading to the throttle body. Does anyone have a part number for this item and/or a picture? Are there multiple choices for this style filter, or just 1 that will fit correctly???????

Thanks, Chris.

I think that filter you've seen is for the C5 if I'm not mistaken. I'm not sure if they have that for the C4's. The closest that I can recall for the C4's with that setup is "the claw", which has 3 small filters that lead directly into the TB.

Yes K&N makes two actually (one is 700? cfm and the other is 1000 cfm (the one I have)) I picked it up from either Summit or Jeg's .. can't remember which, it was about $70. One thing it only works for our cars ('90 and '91 ... the Speed Density ones). I have been told that they actually reduce the HP due to the heated air from the engine compartment being drawn in, but I have yet to prove or debunk this. One other thing there is a little of a clearance issue near the TPS sensor and the thermostat housing (kinda a tight fit.)

There is one pic of the filter here http://myweb.cableone.net/gceagle34/Modifications/Modifications.htm

Yes, I see this with the cone filter mounted on my 406's snozz. I wish my '84 hood allowed me to mount the '87 airbox that I bought, to feed my speed-density-fed motor the cooler air it likes best!

Thanks Hrtbeat1; I actually ordered one from Pep Boys on-line for $34.24 with free ground shipping; Jegs & Summit have them for $42.95 and $42.99. As with all topics, there appears to be many opinions on whether it is a good idea or not to use this style filter due to heat, clearance, etc. issues. I'm gonna try it, and if I don't like the results, I'll probably return it or sell it on E-Bay........
