I have an 86 and just bought a K & N Air Filter with the Lid Package and would like to know how to remove the knob/screw that held the original Filter Cover on so I can install the new Lid Package. It has a plastic flange that keeps it secure to the original Cover. Can this just be broken off and just it as is ?

If you mean the 3 that hold the airbox on, they should just unscrew by hand. Atleast thats the case on my 90. The end 2 hold the airbox to the car, and the middle one holds the 2 pieces together.

No, mine has only 2 screws, one at each end of the cover. There is a plastic insert that is on the other side of the screw that in on the inside of the cover. It prevents the screw from falling thru the cover hole. I could break off the plastic and hope I don't loose the screws when I put the new K & N cover on.

I just put an SLP induction and K&N filter on my 88 and I know about those 2 screws. What I did was use a small flat blade screwdriver and push the little nubs back through the hole. Luckily I didn't break them, though they did have some plastic shaved off the nubs. They snapped right into the new cover pretty easily. Hope that helps. Good luck!!
