Hello all

I am picking up my 2001 C5 Friday night, and I can't wait. In the meantime, I have been reading about the K40 Radar detector - Laser jammer. Looks like they will guarantee the system by paying for your ticket if you get stopped. however $1500 is a tall investment for something that might not work well.

Any info would be helpful.

Thx
Dom

Dom,
First of all, welcome to the :CAC

I think you'll find this community is a wealth of information for Corvette owners.

On the subject of Radar Detectors, I think you'll get a number of opinions, particularly about the Valentine. Before those others chime in, I just need to offer my $0.02: I don't trust them. I think they give one a false sense of security. But, as I said, you will have passionate advocate for them (just wait and see- this thread will get quite busy.) :)

Again, welcome! Post some pics of your baby when you get a chance!

Welcome

Congratulations!! When I bought my car I had to wait to pick it up too. The night before I couldn't even sleep. My recommendation is to go get a good racing game to play, or better yet go out to an indoor go-cart racing track. It will really help settle the nerves. If you get a radar detector the police will not give you an inch of leeway. I used to run detectors all the time and they never helped because the laser is trigger set, by the time you detect them they got ya. Your better off to just keep your eyes open and keep it slow in traffic.

Congrats on the vette purchase! I know how you feel!!!

As for the radar/laser detector, I wouldn't do it. I echo Patrick & Joe's comments. Once your nabbed and you have a detector, there's usually no slack cut.

Spend the $1500. on a GM Protection Plan, if you haven't already, or some goodies for you and the C5!!!

Oh by the way, you won't sleep for a few nights AFTER you get the car, either!!

And get used to this ---> :D, because that's what your gonna look like for a good, long while !!

I would not think about driving the Vette without a radar detector!! My state is crawling with Smokies--county mounties, locals, and state troopers-- using radar guns. Learn to read it and the Bel 980 will give you plenty of slow-down room even at Corvette cruise speed. Laser is not in widespead use here, but it in some states as is Pop radar. Get a detector 'cause you'll be amazed at how the C5 like to run!!

Dom - Welcome to the :CAC

Congrats on your '01 Pewter convertible! Post some pictures when you can - we love to ooh and aah over pics.

Like chrisr said - get used to wearing the Corvette :D

As for detectors, I don't have one so I can't make a recommendation. But the suggestion about a protection plan/warranty is sound advice. I would further suggest you check into making a donation to a trooper's or policeman's support organization. My parents and my brother did and received a nice colorful sticker to place on their windshields. My mom insisted I take one of them for my Vette because she says it LOOKS like it's going fast just sitting in a parking lot. My brother says his sticker saved him from getting 2 tickets so far. Hopefully it would gain you some consideration in the event you're stopped - AND it's for a great cause. JMO

Dom, welcome aboard.

I've been considering a detector for some time now. I'm interested to hear what the replies are. Detectors are legal in Georgia... but laser jammers? I'm not so sure about that. The Mr. and I were discussing this the other day. If you jam their laser radar, won't they know it? Just curious.

k40

i read in one of my vette magazine's,a while ago, that the k40 was not that much better,if at all, than any other detector.i just sold a 8500 X 50 passport,it was fine most of the time.one occasion,it didn't go off as i passed a trooper sitting there, but don't know if he had radar on!i believe all radar det.manuf. have some kind of guarantee about paying your ticket, anyway!save the 1500.spend 250-450,passport or valentine, and bank the rest.when you get mod fever, you'll need the money!once it starts,it don't stop!welcome, and good luck w/the vette!

Thank for the advise. I think im starting to agree with you. I'm already finding myself thinking about exhausts and accessories

Try again

I have to say, I was like a kid when I hit the first open patch of road and dropped the hammer!!

Hey Dom!

Sweeeet! Have fun, and get used to that feeling. And get used to wearing that grin for awhile too. :D Don't forget to wave at other Corvettes! :w

JAG
P.S. I passed a silver C5 coupe on I-10 on the way home from work Saturday afternoon and he wouldn't wave (he chose not to 'cause he looked right at me waving to him)... that wasn't you was it???? :ugh :L

Hi dom, congrats on the new ride. The k40 will only pay one ticket in the first year of ownership. I purchased a cordless passport, and love it , plus i can pay for 10 tickets with what i saved. HAHA enjoy the ride.
