Many replacement glass shops used to use Butyl tape instead of Thiokol or Urethane, as it was easier, cheaper, and not as messy (less labor involved); they weren't concerned about MVSS frontal impact windshield retention. I also have an original unrestored/unmolested '69 Z/28 with all original glass, and the windshield and backlite are installed with Thiokol.
