78 Pace Car imposter
I live in a relatively small town. I called the local exhaust shop. I was trying to get an estimate of the charges for them to put on "true" dual exhaust, after I get some headers, and not include the cats. Their answer; "Ain't gonna happen. $10,000 fine." They said the exhaust has to be 'bone stock'. If not, the EPA has to approve it before they will touch it.

I won't be ready for it anyway until next year, but I thought I would check to see what I have to budget. I guess it is time to start searching for someone who doesn't read the EPA regs so closely.

:nono

for what it's worth (and i can only speak from the standpoint that i live in a state without vehicle inspection), i was forced into replacing the exhaust system on my 78 pace car (the original was removed during it's transportation to me. not by choice i might add!!). i elected to go with a true dual system and even considered using the baffle pipes that many of the part houses sell (i like the rumble). i decided to go with regular pipes back to resonators instead of mufflers. it will accomplish the same type of sidepipe replica sound from what i have been told. bought all the pipes, hangers and clamps from corvette central for about $180.00 and bought the dual tip resonators from either mid america or ecklers (i don't remember which) for around $150 ish. i figured as long as it was all apart i would restore all the cast parts, so i figure the whole thing should start to go back together in a week or so. the whole experience gave me the oportunity to get rid of the cat which i would have done eventually anyway!!

Before you get carried away with your dual exhaust project check with you local DMV on regulations. Sometimes vehicles are exempt after 25 years some states not. Also find out what the emissions testing requirements are for your state. If you can't pass emissions you can't drive legally and your beautiful dual exhaust would be nice to look at but otherwise useless.

Minnesota doesn't have emissions testing anymore. The EPA is causing the fuss.

Buy the system...get some buddies over.....jack up the car on 4 jack stands......and go to town.........:upthumbs

EPA..............ENVIRONMENTAL POCKETBOOK AGENT$$$$

OH yeah...get a couple of twelve packs so that way when your done you not only have a great sounding car......a sense of accomplishment......a cold brewski......

From what I remember about doing exhaust work, it requires torches and other implements of destruction to get to old rusted pieces off. But it saounds like a good time anyway.

Most of the hanger bolts will snap off with a breaker bar and socket. The biggest problem will be getting the manifold flange studs out without snapping a few of them off.. In that case, you may need to remove the manifolds to get the studs drilled out. Headers anyone?
I replaced my original system on my 82 in a few hours without any power tools, but I did have to get the studs drilled out and replaced them with new studs with brass nuts. Have had the whole system off a few times afterwards without any problems. I used Stainless steel bolts on the cats to avoid any problems getting them apart in the future.:)

he said headers....

in that case, get some piping and some pre bent pieces. only tool you need then is a pipe cutter and a welder.
