knocking lifters sound in rebuildLt5 , HELP !

Hi guys ( and girls )

I just rebuild my lt5 engine completely , its still stock but has better exhuast,
a haibeck chip, a 3 piece K&N filter at the front, and some other small stuff.
Also polished camcovers and plenum in two tone.and used stainless bolts
instead of black original hexes.
NICE LOOKY LOOKY !( send pics later, first need to fix this ****y noise ! )

Renewed all i could and the vacuum pomp nicely turns of after 5-10 secs and
doesnt go on after that. No leaks enywhere and al seems to be hooked up
alright ( al wires, hose's etc etc.) so no error there.
Cams are set to factory spec's ( with the pins in cams etc.) so should be
oke.

Today i started the engine for the first time, and yes it run directly, BUT !!

I hear a mildly TICKING noise on both side's of my cam covers. It sounds like
the lifters make noise against the cams. Even after running it 2 times to max
heat ( at aprox 205 degrees when the fan's came on) and that means the engines run about 15 minutes ( 2 times ) it's still there.?

Because im not 500% sure i put al the lifters back in the same hole's ( id might
have mixed 1-2 peaces trough another) i think it maybe can be that problem.
Ore maybe it takes much longer before or all the lifters have enough oil, i dont
know ! ( i have heard it should go away after a view minutes.

DOES ANYONE have or had the same experiences ? does it suppost to go away after driving it a view ( or more ) mile's ?

Does ( if i misplaced some lifters in the wrong original holes) it go away at all?

Is is a problem ?? ( sound is a ticking sound, but not that im getting scared of
it ! )

ANY experience's are welcome, please advice.

Im from Holland, so not so much expirience's over here with LT5's

Await you advice / finding with great eager !. I'll dont wanna drive it unless
i know what / might be a problem or not ...

I have had my my 87 rebuilt twice. I know its not the same thing but a lifter making noise is either a adjustement problem or lack of lubrication, I think. What kind of oil pressure are you getting while the car is running?

Justin

Enough

Thanks, but pressure is enough, about 40 at idle.

I dont know what engine you have in your' 87 ? , but a lt5 has 32
Very large ( aprox 3cm in diameter) hydrolic lifters and fit, just, in a bored hole, if i wrongly replaced one ( the engine already had about 40k.miles on it , the were already "worn "in by a particular camshaftnock if i then put a were b was and the other way around i think it has to wear in again.
Or maybe it takes a "longer"time before al the air under the lifters is out and
filled by oil ?

But am not 100% sure that's the problem, so thats why looking for folks who had or have simular problems and ask there experiences.

Did you have a likwise problem ? , and did it go after ..... miles ?

Thanks for your kind respons

The lifters are very similar to any hydraulic lifter and system. Mixing lifter is very bad. If they dont damage the cam/cams they may seat and wear in. There are not many people who can give advice from personal experience as this would not be something someone would do and even if they did, they probaly wouldnt know it and would blam any failure on something else. Post you situation to the Corvette Forum, ZR1 Net and LT5 Registry to get as much coverage for help.

What type of oil are you running ?

If you let it idle for 20 minutes or so, does the sound change at all ?

I Use 5w40 synthetic ( holland is cold ! )

Just tried it once or twice for aprox 10 minutes, but no sound change yet.

Thanks for your reply !

I will ! thanks

Trouble was in my case, i had a broken head, had a new one but didnt know
original positions of the lifters !. Only 1, set ? of lifters make noise.

spijker sounds like the cam chain tensioners didn't release or got stock.

one is under the A/C the other is passanger side.

Thanks, but no

Hi pete

Thanks for idea, but amn 100% sure tensioners are oke and poped out.

First, because unscrewed the tens. bolts 1 inch, and put them back in
( when i put them in at rebuild) and you can feel the tension on the bolts.
( and if tensioners would be in "lock"pos. you could move it around with hands.

Second, its only 1-2 lifters on each side of engine. + if tensioners were
still in lock pos. the engine wouldnt run for 2x15 minutes at high and low revs.
It would totaly brake down because of "no timing "etc.

But thans for you interest and mail !
