I have a 78 L82 that is putting out 280 hp. according to the owner before me the car was stock standard, however after having a set of mandrel bent
headers and a 2 1/4 inch twin pipes it was very obivious that the engine has
a cam. my question is did they come standard with any variations ?

My other question is with a RPM air gap manifold and a 650 double pumper
will i get it under a standard corvette bonnet.
any help greatly appreciated.

I think in 1978 there was about 205 h.p. in the l82,if he installed headers, and manifold he may be reaching 250, but it's doubtful that it's near 280 (unless he had a dyno sheet)I'm not 100% sure of the stock base h.p.but those mods may add 30 or 40 h.p. to stock.
bad news is the air gap manifold will not fit under a stock hood.
on the 75 i'm building, i have an l48,ported polished , gasket matched, hi lift cam, headers, holley 680 d.p.weiand excellerator intake, 2500 stall converter ,etc. I am probably at 3 00 h.p. and probably not more.
the main diffrence between l48 and l88 is the size of the valves, and the size of the cam.(same block and heads)mike.

mike ,thanks for the reply, dyno sheets confirm 280 before headers ,may be someone has had a play before me .i do have the history of the car, but nothing that confirms
any mods.
do you know of any air cleaners that are of low enough profile to fit under the hood,
as the car is very original with only 48000 miles[gen] and re4ally want to cut a dirty great hole thru the bonnet. regards ernie

the regular performer intake will fit, but is little more than stock, the performer rpm will fit with a drop filter base .and will wake up the low end.
I used the excellerator from weiand, it's a single plane so you loose a slight bit on the bottom end, but really adds power to the top end 2500rpm to 6000 rpm.

the manufacturers will reccomend one of theirs if you give them the specs on the car and desired use.

carb to bonnet clearance

i am looking at using a proform carb body with my 650 double pumper.
will this give me an extra 1/2 inch or so clearance, the pics on the net appear to show a height difference. also how is the performance with this mod.
the choke is not a worry as brisbane is basically sub tropical.
