Looks like the general is going to recall (at bottom of page)...

GM recalls 1.5 million cars, SUVsby Associated Pressposted Nov 5, 2004DETROIT (AP) — General Motors Corp. is recalling about 1.5 million vehicles, making 2004 a record year for auto recalls, according to federal statistics.

The world's largest automaker reported the four recalls to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Oct. 27, 2004.

GM has recalled 10.47 million vehicles in North America so far this year, up from 7.8 million for all of 2003.

Overall, automakers have recalled 24.8 million vehicles this year, topping the previous high of 24.6 in all of 2000, NHTSA figures show.

"The good news is that the manufacturers seem much more inclined to step forward and quickly remedy the problems," agency spokesman Rae Tyson told The Detroit News.

The latest recalls involve 1,496,056 vehicles, including 946,817 sport utility vehicles — the 2002-2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Oldsmobile Bravada, and the 2004 Buick Rainier — for a taillight malfunction that may have already contributed to two crashes, one with injury.

A second recall involves 339,008 2003-model Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire for taillight and turn-signal malfunctions. The malfunction may have caused at least three crashes, none involving injuries.

A third recall involves the 204,317 2003-model Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac Grand Am and Oldsmobile Alero vehicles, whose accelerators could stick and not return to idle.

A fourth recall involves 5,914 2004-2005 Cadillac XLR and 2005 Chevrolet Corvette models for a possible brake-fluid leak discovered in field tests.

Owners will be notified by GM through the mail and repairs will be made free of charge at GM dealerships.

I find it difficult to believe that tail light malfunctions could cause any more mishaps than the cars that are running around with burned out bulbs, broken headlamps, drivers who don't even bother to signal their intentions etc.

I'm not finding fault with your posting of this information, just stating what goes on in states with no vehicle inspection requirements, and that those vehicle deficiencies are owner responsibilities*.

* Not referring to the factory deficiencies in your post.

HI there,
This recall is only for 2005 Corvette, not c5, it does however cover the 2004 XLR.

Howdy c4c5specialist:w (and you definitely are) I need some information on the C-5 Electronic Column Lock System Recall by GM. They are telling me that this was fixed on the original recall (I have a 2001 with 36000 miles on it) by the previous owner, and I get the computer read out remove key and wait 10 seconds to restart, then a read out occurs Service Column Lock System when I try this, and of course the car will not run when this is going on. I had it towed to the local Chevy dealer and they are still trying to figure it out and are pointing at me to pick up the tab. Can they do this while it is still under a recall? Thanks, and I read your comments on what to do, and I don't think you have missed yet. Scott:beer

Same thing happed to me a couple weeks back. The problem was the Column Lock Actuator Motor. Since it wasn't a part that was listed in the recall (which was done on my 2002 M6 Convertable) the dealer refused to fix it on their dime. I called the Chevy Customer Service people. They investigated, called the dealer, and then agreed with the dealer that since the part wasn't on the list of parts for the recall it was my responsibility. I have an extended warr. plan and it didn't cover the actuator motor so I had to pay for the $380 repair to fix something that isn't needed because the recall obviates the column lock!!!:mad

:w are you telling me that there could be something else in the column that creates this malfunction that is not on the recall listing? :ohnoes
That is not good news, and the only thing going for me is I know the mechanics personally, and they are good mechanics that have helped me out before so I know I won't be hosed with the outcome. It is still in the shop waiting for the go ahead from Chevy if it happens. I guess I will have to be patient and see what happens. I don't blame you for being mad, I may have to bite my tongue when I get the results. Thanks for the feedback, this is what makes CAC work so well. Good luck with your Vette. Scott:beer
