Leaky PS pump

It seems that my new (rebuilt from a big parts house) power steering pump is leaking at a pretty good clip. It only leaks during driving, but after about 10 miles, there is enough fluid to leave a small drip spot. It seems to be coming from the shaft where the pulley attaches. Would this indicate that the belt is too tight, or that the seal there is bad? It would really suck to have to pull the pump and send it back (not to mention remove the pulley), but I don't want all my hardwork under the hood to be soaked in PS fluid!

This is not really your question but, I would try some of that sealing power steering fluid. Mine was rebuilt as well a couple years back, and the previous owner didn't use it much. I was getting some pretty good leaks, almost emptying out the resevoir. I use the sealing ps fluid and it didn't seem to work at first. But, I've noticed that it no longer leaks. So, it took a while, and a couple of fillings, but it did stop the leaks eventually.

I would also check the hose lines. Some of mine were able to be a bit more snugged up.

Another thing that I was told to do which helped see where the leaks were coming from was to spray everything with brake clean in order to remove all the gook and ps fluid, so you can then see where the leaks are.

Hope that helps a little!

Power steering leak

If you go the sealer route I would strongly recomend Lucas power steering sealer, a little expensive about $7.00 a bottle but it works great. However if I just bought a rebuilt pump and it was a leaker I would certainly get it exchanged.

My opinion...

do you wanna be on a cruise and have the leak preventer fail?:mad

take your time and remove it, return it, look in the Haynes manual for the proper tension...remember the Waterboy?
"You can do it!";)
I would rather have the security of knowing its not a leaky unit.

I agree, I do prefer to repair the problem then treat its symptoms. It's a bit frustrating b/c I'm missing a perfect weekend of cruising. The weather couldn't have been better this weekend. Thanks

Hey folks, well I got a replacement pump and I'm still getting some minor leakage. I would question the control valve, but there is a wet spot on the FRONT of the PS pump. How common are leaky shaft seals... especially on rebuilt pumps from Ecklers? This problem certainly is annoying. It's only a small sized drip, but that's too much and makes a mess.
